본 연구는 프랑스 소설가 알프레드 자리가 제안한 상상의 과학인 파타피직스 세계에 경도되었던 20세기 문학가와 예술가의 창조적 기계 표현을 살펴본다. 알프레드 자리를 포함해 마르셸 뒤샹, 레이몽 루셀, 프란츠 카프카 등은 그들의 작품에서 남녀 간의 사랑과 죽음, 욕망과 처벌의 관계를 ‘독신자 기계’의 메커니즘으로 표현했다. 이 ‘독신자 기계’ 테마를 분석한 미셸 카루주의 텍스트와 들뢰즈/가타리의 분열분석 텍스트를 참조하여, 하랄트 제만은 1975년 《독신자 기계》 전시를 기획하는데 여기에는 문학가와 예술가의 작품, 철학자와 정신질환자의 표현, 사진과 도큐멘트, 인공품과 안드로이드 로봇까지 포함된다. 본 연구는 이 전시에서 핵심적인 몇몇 작품을 골라 ‘독신자 기계’의 구조와 특성으로 분석하고, 이들이 맺는 결연과 새로운 이행을 살펴본다. 《독신자 기계》전이 보여준 모든 것들이 동등하게 관계 맺고, 정반대항으로의 도치가 수시로 일어나는 파타피직스 세계는 오늘날 우리가 지향하는 인간, 기계, 사물의 ‘평평한 존재론’을 선취한 것으로 평가될 수 있다.

영문 초록

This study examines the creative mechanical expression of writers and artists in the 20th century, who were fascinated by the world of imaginary science, Pataphysics, which was proposed by the French novelist Alfred Jarry. Alfred Jarry, Marcel Duchamp, Raymond Russell, and Franz Kafka described the relationship between love and death, desire and punishment as a mechanism of a ‘bachelor machine’. Referring to Michel Carrouges’s analysis of the bachelor machine, and Deleuze and Guattari’s schizo􋹲analysis, Harald Szeemann organized the exhibition “Bachelor Machine” in 1975. In this exhibition, which featured works by writers and artists, expressions of philosophers and the mentally ill, photographs and documentations, artificial objects and Android robots, we select some key works and analyze them using the structure and characteristics of the ‘bachelor machine’, and examine their alliance and new transition. The world of Pataphysics, where all things featured in the exhibition are equally related and an inversion to the opposite frequently occurs, is evaluated as a preview of the ‘flat ontology’ of humans, machines, and things that we pursue today.
