천연접착제로써 옻칠의 사용법 연구

국문 초록

천연수지인 옻칠은 공예품의 장식과 보호를 위한 도료의 역할과 목재 연결부위 접합, 또는 나전 등 장식재료의 접착을 위한 접착제의 역할로 사용된다. 접착제로써 옻칠은 천연소재나 친환경 소재를 선호하는 시대적 요구와 부합하며 합성수지 접착제를 대신할 수 있는 소재로 연구되고 있다. 현재, 옻칠을 사용하는 접착제에 관한 연구는 옻과 아교(阿膠)를 섞거나 화학적으로 성질을 변화시키는 방법 등 물리·화학적인 연구 위주로 진행되고 있어 실제 옻칠 작업에서 사용할 수 있는 실무적인 사용법에 관한 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 또한 옻칠 작업 현장에서 개별적으로 사용하고 있는 옻칠 접착제에 대한 정리 및 기초 문헌 연구의 필요성도 요구되고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 옻칠을 사용하여 만든 접착제를 실제로 활용할 수 있는 방법으로 구체화하기 위해 옻칠 접착제의 종류를 구분하여 특징을 정리하고, 이를 토대로 옻칠 접착제 제작법과 나전 접착방식으로 나누어 연구하였다. 옻칠 접착제의 사용은 나전 접착에 한정하였으며, 나전의 모양, 두께와 면적 그리고 접착 면의 상태에 따라 옻칠을 반경화(半硬化) 상태로 만들어 점도를 올려 접착력을 높이는 방법, 생칠과 아교를 혼합하는 방식, 생칠과 글루텐(gluten)을 혼합하는 방식으로 세분화하였다. 또한 옻칠과 아교, 옻칠과 글루텐의 혼합비율 등의 구체적 제작법 외에도 나전접착을 위한 가사시간(可使時間), 실란트(sealant) 역할 등의 특성과 장단점을 파악하고 연구자의 옻칠 작품 제작에 적용하여 이를 실제 사용법으로 제시하였다. 이를 통해 옻칠 접착제의 친환경성 뿐만 아니라 기능성 및 가공공정의 편의성 측면에서도 장점을 밝힐 수 있었으며, 옻칠 접착제를 이용한 타 소재의 접착 및 타 분야에서의 활용 가능성도 확인할 수 있었다. 앞으로 전통기법의 계승 측면에서 옻칠 접착제의 사용뿐 아니라 안정성과 접착강도 등에 대한 추가연구를 통해 현대적, 산업적으로 실용화하고 다양하게 활용할 수 있기를 기대한다.

영문 초록

Ottchil(traditional Korean lacquer) is natural resin, and it has been used as varnish to decorate and protect crafted products, as well as to glue wooden and decorative materials such as mother-of-pearl. Ottchil as adhesive meets the requirements of the times, as it is a natural, environmentally friendly material, and is researched as a substitute for natural resin adhesive. Physical and chemical research is presently ongoing on Ottchil adhesive for the method of mixing Ottchil and mother-of-pearl, changing its chemical properties etc., and research is also needed for its practical use as adhesive. A systematic study and basic literature are further needed for Ottchil adhesive, which is currently being used in individual Ottchil works. In this treatise, therefore, adhesive made from Ottchil is indicated as Ottchil adhesive, and the methods are specified for its practical applications. The properties of Ottchil adhesives are categorized according to their types, for the respective methods of producing Ottchil adhesives and attaching mother-of-pearl. The use of Ottchil adhesives is limited here to adhesion of mother-of-pearl, and the research is divided into the technique of increasing adhesive strength with higher viscosity based on a shape, thickness, and its proportion of mother-of-pearl, and the conditions of an adhesive area, and the technique of mixing Ottchil and animal glue and mixing Ottchil and gluten. In addition to the specific production method of changing the mixing ratio of Ottchil and animal glue, Ottchil and gluten etc., the properties as well as the positive and negative aspects are examined on the working life of attaching mother-of-pearl, the role of sealants, etc. The result is applied to the production of Ottchil works by the author of this treatise, which is presented as a practical application. As such, not only the ecological friendliness of Ottchil adhesives, but also their utility and ease of processing are revealed, and the adhesion of other materials using Ottchil adhesives and their usage in other applications are confirmed. Physical and chemical research on stability, adhesive strengths and other elements is subsequently needed for modern, industrial application of Ottchil adhesives, which may hopefully promote research not only for the preservation of the traditional Ottchil technique, but also for its utility as a natural glue.
