국문 초록

성격에 대한 연구에서 많은 학자들은 성격발달에 있어서 문화적인 결정요인을 강조한다. 유교정치문화는 한국 관료의 가치관에 중대하게 영향을 미치는 요인이 되었기에 한국 관료의 행태는 유교정치문화와 밀접한 연관을 맺고 있다고 할 수 있다. 지금까지 유교정치문화의 영향으로 한국 관료가 권위주의 성격을 보인다는 주장은 많이 제기되어 왔지만 구체적으로 그 연관성을 규명한 연구는 없었다. 그러므로 이 글에서는 권위주의 성격의 특성과 유교정치문화의 특성을 체계적으로 비교해 양자 간의 상관관계를 살펴봄으로써 유교정치문화와 권위주의 성격 형성의 관련성을 규명해 보았다. 유교정치문화에서 나타나는 권위에 대한 강한 복종, 권위주의, 인습주의 및 보수주의, 관료제의 특성은 권위주의 성격의 특성인 권위적 복종, 권위적 공격, 인습주의와 뚜렷한 유사성을 보인다. 결국 유교정치문화를 내면화한 한국 관료는 권위주의 성격을 소유하게 된다고 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

In the field of personality studies, psychologists emphasize the cultural determinants of personality development. Because Neo-Confucian political culture has significantly influenced the value of Korean bureaucrats, the bureaucrats’ personality is closely related to Neo-Confucian political culture. There are many arguments which insist that Korean bureaucrats bear authoritarian personality due to influence of Neo-Confucian political culture. However, there is no study which systematically examined the co-relationship between them. Therefore, the systematic comparison between characteristics of Neo-Confucian personality and characteristics of authoritarian personality is conducted in this study in order to explore the relationship between Neo-Confucian political culture and the formation of authoritarian personality. Strong submission to authority, authoritarianism, conventionalism and conservatism, and bureaucracy which are characteristics of Neo-Confucian political culture reveal remarkable similarity to authoritarian submission, authoritarian aggression, and conventionalism which are characteristics of authoritarian personality. Eventually, it is obvious that the Korean bureaucrats’ authoritarian personality can be developed from internalizing the Neo-Confucian political culture.
