국문 초록

2열왕 2,23-25은 잔인한 장면을 보여주는 구약성경의 본문들 중 하나로, 적절한 해석이 성경의 독자들에게 필요하다. 엘리사 예언자가 베텔로 올라가는 도중에 자신을 놀려 대는 어린아이들을 주님의 이름으로 저주하자 숲에서 암곰 두 마리가 나와 그들 중 마흔두 명을 찢어 죽였다는 이 일화는, 예로부터 성경 주해학자들 사이에서 해석하기 어려운 본문 중 하나로 여겨져 왔다. 본문 자체에서는 어떠한 해석이나 해명도 찾을 수가 없기 때문이다. 대다수 학자들은 해당 본문이 교훈적 목적으로 저작 또는 편집되었다는 입장을 견지하면서, 연장자에 대한 존중과 순명, 윤리–도덕 차원을 초월하는 가치로서 예언자에 대한 우선적 존경 또는 그가 대변하는 하느님께 대한 불경함에 대한 경각심 등을 가르치는 이야기로 이해되어야 한다고 주장하기도 했다. 본고는 2열왕 2,23–25의 본문 주해를 통해, 엘리사 예언자가 받은 조롱과 그가 했던 저주의 의미 그리고 저주의 실현이 시사하는 신학적 주제를 다룬다. 해당 본문이 주변 단락들 그리고 다른 구약성경 낱권들과 공유하는 내용–주제적 연관성에 대한 병행 연구는 ‘엘리사의 저주 사화’가 지닌 신학적 메시지를 더욱 분명하게 드러낸다. 2열왕 2,23–25의 에피소드는 베텔의 어린아이들이 예언자의 성급한 분노로 인해 지나치게 가혹한 죽음을 맞이했다는 식의 ‘이해불가의 이야기’가 아니다. 이 본문은 보다 더 심원한 내용, 즉 이스라엘 백성의 정체성의 근간이 되는 시나이 계약과 신명기 전통을 훼손하고 하느님께서 세우신 질서(율법, 예배)를 위반하는 것이 얼마나 심각한 배신 행위인지, 그 책임이 얼마나 중한지(계약 저주) 성경의 독자들에게 엄숙히 선포하고 있다. 단 세 절에 불과한 이 짧은 본문은, 구약 신학에서 가장 중요한 계약 사상과 신명기 전통이라는 거대한 신앙 질서에 맞갖은 삶의 중요성을 독자들에게 가르치고 있다.

영문 초록

2Kings 2,23–25 is one of the texts of the Old Testament that show cruel scenes, requiring proper interpretation for readers of the Bible. This story says that prophet Elisha, on his way up to Bethel, cursed in the name of the Lord the children who mocked him and then she-bears came forth out of the forest and tore forty and two children of them. This episode has long been considered one of the hard texts to interpret among biblical commentators. This is because no interpretation or explanation can be found in the text itself. Maintaining that the text was written or edited for instructive purposes, most scholars argued that it should be understood as a story that teaches respect for elders and obedience to them, priority for respect for prophets over the ethic–moral dimension, or awareness of the profanity of God he represents. With an textual interpretation of 2Kings 2,23–25, this article deals with the meanings of mockery of the prophet Elisha and of his curse, and theological themes that the realization of the curse suggests. A parallel study of the content–thematic association with surrounding paragraphs and other Old Testament books reveals more clearly theological messages of “Elisha’s Curse” story. The episode of 2Kings 2,23–25 is not an ‘incomprehensible story’ in which Betel’s children died too harshly due to the prophet’s hasty anger. The text solemnly declares to readers of the Bible the more profound content: how serious betrayal it is to undermine the Sinai covenant and the deuteronomic traditions, the basis of the identity of the people of Israel, and to violate the order that God has constituted(laws, worship). This short text, which consists of only three verses, teaches readers the importance of life in the great religious order, the thoughts of the covenant and of the deuteronomic tradition, which are the most important in Old Testament theology.
