20세기초 지형도로 본 제주

국문 초록

본 논문은 20세기에 제작된 제주도 지형도 현황을 파악하고, 이 가운데 20세 초 한국 근대지형도에 반영된 지리정보를 통해 제주도의 자연환경은 물론 이 시기 변화한 경관을 연구하는데 목적으로 하였다. 이를 위하여 19세기 말에서 20세기 초에 제작된 1:50,000 제주 근대 지형도를 분석 대상으로 하여 1910년대 11장, 1950년대 8장, 1970년대 6장에 대하여 각 시기별로 제작된 지형도의 특징을 살펴보았다. 그리고 《大東輿地圖》와 『民籍統計表』, 『新舊對照朝鮮全道府郡面里洞名稱一覽』, 『地方行政一覽表』를 통해 지명을 비교하고 당시 행정구역을 복원하였다. 이를 토대로 20세기 초에 제작된 근대지형도를 활용하여 이 시기 제주도의 행정구역, 지명, 하천의 지리정보를 파악하고, 역사지리환경을 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 한국근대지형도에 표기된 지명과 지리정보를 활용하여 20세기 초 제주의 모습을 확인할 수 있었다는데 의의가 있다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the current status of the modern maps of Jeju Island which had been produced in the early 20th century and to scrutinize the natural environment and landscape change of Jeju island in this period through geographic information reflected in modern topographic maps of Korea. To this end, the authors investigated the characteristics of the 1:50,000 topographic maps of Jeju Island that had been produced from the late 19th century untill the early 20th century on the basis of the analysis of 25 topographic maps; 11 produced in the 1910s, 8 in the 1950s, and 6 in the 1970s. In addition, geographical names was compared and information on administrative districts at that time was restored through the investigation of 《大東輿地圖(Daedongyeo-jido)》와 『民籍統計表(Minjeok-tonggyepyo)』, 『新舊對照朝鮮全道府郡面里洞名稱一覽(Shingudaejo-joseon-jeondobugunmyeonridong-myengchingillam)』, 『地方行政一覽表(Jibanghaengjeong-illampyo)』. Integrating this restored information with the modern topographic map produced in the early 20th century, the authors identified the geographical information of administrative districts, geographical names, and rivers of Jeju Island during this period and confirmed the historical geographic environment at that time. Therefore, this study is meaningful in that the appearance of Jeju Island in the early 20th century was restored by using place names and geographic information reflected on the modern topographic maps of Korea.
