국문 초록

본고는 <주생전>을 작가 권필이 활동하던 조선 중기의 시대적 상황과 작품 속 주인공 주생의 인물 성격을 바탕으로 작품을 재해석하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 본고는 <주생전>의 작가 권필의 생애 및 그의 몇몇 작품들, 그리고 <주생전>의 서두에 등장하는 주생의 상업 종사 등에 대한 논의를 통해, 이 작품이 남녀의 애정문제를 매개로 개인의 욕망과 이익만을 추구하는 당대의 시대상을 풍자하는 현실 비판적 작품으로 읽힐 수 있음을 고찰하였다. 작가 권필이 활동하던 조선 중기는 서인과 동인의 격렬한 대립이라는 정치 현실과 상업의 활성화라는 사회 현실이 중첩되고, 더불어 임진란의 혼란이 가중되어 미래가 불확실한 시대였다. 당대의 지식인을 자처하는 작가 권필은 <주생전>을 통해, 본업을 버리고 상업에 종사하면서 이익과 부를 좇는 당대의 사회 현실과 지혜나 능력이 아니라 운수에 따라 관직에 오르내리는 당대의 정치 현실을 풍자하고 비판하고자 했다고 할 수 있다. 작가는 이 같은 주제 의식을 형상화하기 위해 서두에 주생의 상업 종사 이력을 압축적으로 제시하였으며 이후 성적 욕망을 매개로 자신의 이익과 욕망에 집착하는 주생을 그렸던 것이다. 이를 통해 이익과 욕망에 눈이 멀어 더 높은 자리(지위, 관직)를 차지하려다가 실패하자 또 다른 대상을 찾아가서 그 욕망을 추구하려는 작중 인물(주생)을 통해, 이익과 부을 우선시하는 상업 지향적 현실과 벼슬이나 지위가 능력과 지혜가 아니라 운에 의해 좌우되는 정치 현실 등 을 비판하고 있다. 그러므로 <주생전>은 상업을 통한 자본 지향이라는 사회 현실, 능력이나 지혜와 무관한 자들이 높은 벼슬을 차지하는 정치 현실 등에 대한 작가의 현실 인식을 문학적 구조물로 축조한 작품이라 할 수 있다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to reinterpret the work based on the situation of the period in the middle of the Cho-son Dynasty when the artist Kwon-Pil was active and the character of the main character in the work. This paper discusses the life of the writer of , some of his works, and the commercial engagement of Ju-saeng appearing at the beginning of . Based on this, it was considered that this work can be read as a critical piece of reality that satirizes the contemporary times that pursue only individual desires and interests through the affection of men and women as a medium. In the middle of the Cho-son Dynasty, when the artist was active, the political reality of fierce confrontation between Seo-in and Dong-in overlapped with the social reality of revitalization of commerce, and the confusion of Im-jin-ran was aggravated and the future was uncertain. Through his work, the artist tried to satirize and criticize the current social reality, wisdom, and ability to pursue profits and wealth while abandoning his main job and engaging in commerce, but the political reality of the day, which rises and falls in office according to luck. In order to embody such thematic consciousness, the artist condensedly presented Ju-saeng s history of commercial engagement at the beginning, and later, through sexual desire, drew on his own interests and desires. Through this, through the literary characters (Ju-saeng) who have failed to occupy a higher position because of their desires and interests, the commercial-oriented reality that prioritizes profits and wealth, and the political reality in which the position or position is determined by luck rather than ability and wisdom. Are criticizing. Therefore, can be said to be a work that built the artist s perception of the reality of the social reality of capital orientation through commerce and the political reality in which those who are not related to ability or wisdom occupy a high position in a literary structure.
