동아시아의 문화냉전과 영화의 위상

국문 초록

이 글은 반둥회의부터 베트남전쟁까지 인도네시아를 중심으로 동남아 주요 국가 영화의 위상을 통하여 문화냉전의 양상을 살핀 것이다. 연구를 위하여 동남아시아영화제와 영화 상영 공간 그리고 역사적 텍스트로서 <액트 오브 킬링 The Act of Killing>를 분석했다. 1960년대 중반 인도네시아의 역사적 상황과 관련하여 살펴본 바, 영화제는 2차 세계 대전이후 새로운 아시아를 상상하는 통로였으나 동시에 그것의 불가능을 보여주었다. 그것은 ‘신중국’의 등장과 동북아 최전선 반공 기지로서 한국의 수립, 한일수교에 이은 냉전의 분업 형성 그리고 ‘비동맹 중립’ 국가를 모색했으나 결국 사회주의로 경도된 인도네시아 등 물리적 거리와 이념을 초월하여 관통된 문화냉전의 일면이었다. 냉전기 동남아시아의 영화 상영 공간에 대한 현지인의 해석과 의미부여 그리고 그곳에서 자신의 삶을 꾸린 자들을 살펴본 바, 종족과 이산 그리고 문화 번역의 문제는 인도네시아를 포함한 동남아시아 지역 사회의 정치사회적 상황에 따라 달리 나타났다. 나아가 미국 주도의 문화냉전 구축 형성에 대하여 저항 또는 협동하는 과정에서 영화를 둘러싼 일상은 해당 국가 구성원의 삶을 구성하는 주요 요인으로 작용하였다.

영문 초록

This work examines the historicity of the cultural landscape surrounding films and the place of film exhibition in Southeast Asian countries especially in Indonesia regarding the cultural cold war during the period spanning from the Bandung Conference to the Vietnam War. Moreover, this paper investigates the status of cinema during the period, the meaning of the Southeast Asian Film Festival which started in 1954, and the social activities of people who were involved in movie theaters. This essay especially analyzes the movie entitled The Act of Killing to discover how people who called themselves “preman” (freeman in English) participated in the ‘Genocide’ in 1965 as anti-communists. For Indonesia, making films was a way of building the new nation-state after liberation from Holland in 1950. In addition, the Southeast Asian Film Festival was held for the purpose of the formation of ‘New Asia’ led by Indonesia s ideology. However, it showed its impossibility. In other words, film showings were interlinked with the contexts of historical and political phases: the building of the People’s Republic of China, the construction of the anti-communist base of South Korea, the introduction of ‘New Japan’ to South Korea led by the Korea-Japan Treaty of 1965 and the practice of socialism in Indonesia. The cultural landscape surrounding movie theaters in Southeast Asian countries manifested their locality while resisting against, and at the same time, cooperating with the Cultural Cold War regime amidst their political circumstances. This is also correlated with nationalism issues such as ethnic politics, diaspora, and cultural translation in multi-layered ways, along with the problems of the old and new imperialism - remnants of World War II. Even these locality have molded the daily lives of their people and construction of their cultural identity.
