국문 초록

이 연구는 폐광지역에 거주하는 지역주민의 환경오염으로 인한 재산 및 건강상 피해에 대한 인식차이를 분석하였다. 연구대상은 강원도 정선군 지역주민이다. 분석결과를 정리하면 첫째, 정선군 내에서도 폐석탄 광산이 다수 위치한 폐광지역 집단과 아닌 집단의 거주자 피해인식이 차이를 보였다. 둘째 지역사회에 거주기간이 길고, 연령대가 높을수록 피해에 대한 인식차이를 나타냈다. 셋째, 폐광지역 및 생태계 파괴, 토양오염, 지반침하 변수는 재산 피해(지가 하락)에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 정신 및 건강상 피해에 대한 인식차이는 폐광지역, 생태계 파괴, 지반 침하변수가 유의미한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타났다. 종합하면 ‘폐광지역’이라는 부정적인 인식, 즉, ‘스티그마’가 재산 및 건강 피해, 지역이미지 훼손에 영향을 미치고 있음을 검증하였다.

영문 초록

The current study analyzes the perceptions of property and health damages caused by environmental pollution held by residents in areas with abandoned mines. The subjects are residents of Jeongseon County and Gangwon Province, Korea. First, the analysis revealed that within the county, the group of residents living in areas with multiple abandoned coal mines had different perceptions of damages from environmental pollution from those of groups living in areas without abandoned mines. Second, residents who are older and have been in the local community longer have displayed different perceptions of damages. Third, variables regarding the destruction of the ecosystem, soil pollution, and ground subsidence have a significant influence on perceptions of property damages (decline in land values). Fourth, variables regarding residence in abandoned mine area, destruction of the ecosystem, and ground subsidence have significant effects on the perception of mental and physical health. In sum, the current study validates that the negative perception of local areas—that is, a stigma—is influencing damages to property, health, and image of local communities.
