국문 초록

본 연구의 목적은 개개인의 작업기억 용량의 차이가 추론 능력에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는 것을 통해 언어와 고차 인지과정의 관계에 대해 살펴보는 것이다. 이를 위하여 본 연구에서는 대학생들을 대상으로 Daneman과 Carpenter(1980)의 읽기 폭(reading span) 과제를 변형한 과제를 실시하여 언어의 이해와 관련된 개개인의 작업기억의 처리 용량을 살펴보고 추론 문장 이해 과제를 통해 추론 문장의 논리적 유효성과 그 문장이 담고 있는 내용의 그럴듯함 여부에 따른 개인의 추론 문장의 읽기 시간과 이해의 정확도를 측정하였다. 그 결과 추론 문장의 읽기 시간은 개개인의 읽기 폭에 따라 큰 차이가 없지만 추론 문장의 이해 정도는 개개인의 읽기 폭에 따라 차이가 있었다. 본 연구의 결과는 개개인의 작업기억 용량이 추론능력에 영향을 미치며 특히 그럴듯하지 않지만 논리적으로 유효한 문장의 이해 정도가 개개인의 읽기 폭의 차이를 가장 잘 예언한다는 것을 보여주었다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the working memory capacity on the higher cognitive processes. Especially, this study focused on the effect of the individual difference of the reading span on the inference processing. To do so, the logical validity of the sentence based on preceeding sentences and plausibility of the meaning were varied to manipulate the inference complexity. Also, reading spans of the participants were measured by automated reading span task and their accuracy and reading time for the inference sentences were measured. As results, those with higher reading span solved the inference sentences more accurately than those with lower reading span. The reading times of the inference sentences did not varied by the participants’ reading span. The results also showed that participants’ reading spans were explained the most by the accuracy of the unplausible-logically valid inference sentences and the next by the accuracy of the unplausible-logically void inference sentences. The results showed that the working memory capacity measured by automated reading span task is a possible candidate of the main sources of the difference of the individual’s inference processing ability.
