국문 초록

1987년 6월 항쟁 이후 민주화가 진전되는 가운데 본격화된 역사전쟁의 배경과 전개과정, 그리고 결과가 자리한 곳에는 언제나 정치투쟁이 자리하고 있었다. 지난 30여 년간의 역사전쟁은 정치적 주류 자리를 둘러싼 보수와 진보세력 간의 치열한 정치투쟁 권력투쟁의 궤적과 함께했다. 그러므로 역사전쟁을 들여다본다는 것은 곧 민주화 이후 30여년 만에 이뤄진 보수에서 진보로의 주류 교체의 과정에서 역사, 즉 역사-정치담론이 수행한 정치적 역할을 살피는 것이기도 하다. 또한 정쟁의 소용돌이 속에서 발발한 역사전쟁에서 ‘진보의 전사’로 싸웠던 역사학이라는 학문이 ‘지금 여기’에서 성찰해야 할 것은 무엇인지 짚어보는 작업의 일환이기도 하다. 본고에서는 그동안 역사전쟁에 대한 축적된 연구 성과들을 기반으로 1987년 민주화 전후부터 오늘날까지 치열한 정쟁 속에 보수에서 진보로의 정치적 주류의 교체가 이뤄지는 과정과 역사전쟁이 얽혀 있음에 주목해 그 전개 과정을 다섯 국면으로 나누어 재해석하고자 한다.

영문 초록

Since the struggle for Democracy of June 1987, while Democratic conventions have been established in the Korean society one by one, a totally different battle was being waged again and again over how to interpret historical events and trends, and those battles were always accompanied by political clashes. For the last three decades, all these ‘wars over history,’ or “History wars” as we came to label them, coincided with aggressive political conflicts between the conservatives and the progressives which continued to fight over a mainstream status and power in the Korean society. In that regard, review of all these “History wars” would prove most informative as they would certainly reveal what kind of role “History,” or ‘political History discourses’ to be exact, played in such political conflicts and not to mention an eventual turnover that came after over thirty years. Such review would also encourage us to contemplate on the issue of, as a field of academism, what should be done by Historiography, which virtually fought at the frontline of such conflict representing the progressive side of the battle, in the future. Examined in this article, based on studies of the so-called “History wars” that have been unfolding so far, are how political conflicts -which began with the Democratization process in 1987 and still continuing today-tended to intertwine with the mainstream power switch from conservatives to progressives, and spawned all those History wars. In such examination, the nature of such conflicts will be reinterpreted over five distinctive phases.
