자원봉사관광 참여자의 경험에 대한 현상학적 연구

국문 초록

내적 성장을 목적으로 하는 관광이 확대됨에 따라 자원봉사관광은 각광을 받고 있다. 자원봉사관광은 사회적 약자를 위한 이타적 활동, 환경보존을 위한 사회적 책임의 측면과 새로운 지역과 문화에 대한 체험 욕구를 가진 관광활동 측면으로 나뉜다. 자원봉사관광객은 복합적인 성향을 동시에 보이며, 각 동기의 정도에 따라 활동성향은 차이를 보인다. 따라서 본 연구는 현상학적 연구방법을 활용하여 자원봉사관광객의 경험을 이해하고, 자원봉사관광 발전을 위한 시사점을 도출하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 해외자원봉사관광에 참여한 경험이 있는 국내 대학생 12명을 대상으로 인터뷰를 실시하였으며, 이들의 진술을 바탕으로 현상학적 측면에서 분석하였다. 분석결과 이들의 경험은 세 가지로 유형화 할 수 있었다. 첫째, 자원봉사관광을 통해 현지인과 교류하고, 함께 참여한 동료들과 교류하면서 새로운 인간관계를 확장할 수 있었으며, 나아가 활동을 통해 자아실현과 내적 성장을 이룩하는 정서적 만족을 느낄 수 있었다. 둘째, 자원봉사관광이라는 것이 가지고 있는 긍정적인 이미지로 인해 선호하는 경향이 있었으며, 그 지역의 독특한 문화를 경험할 수 있었다는 점에서 현지의 문화를 잘 알 수 있는 계기가 되었다. 셋째, 단편적인 봉사활동만으로는 현지에 도움이 되지 않지만, 그럼에도 불구하고 지속적인 관심과 협력이 필요하다고 이야기 하였다. 이에 자원봉사관광은 참여자의 관심을 촉구하는 계기가 되었으며, 앞으로도 영향을 미칠 것이라 하였다. 이와같은 연구결과를 바탕으로 본 연구는 학술적, 실무적 측면의 시사점을 도출하였다.

영문 초록

As tourism for the purpose of internal growth expands, volunteer tourism has been spotlighted. Volunteer tourism is divided into altruistic activities for social responsibility and tourism activities with a desire to experience new regions and cultures. Volunteer tourists show complex inclinations at the same time, and activity tendencies vary according to the degree of each motive. Therefore, this study aimed to understand the experiences of volunteer tourists using phenomenological research methods and to draw implications for volunteer tourism development. To this end, an interview was conducted with 12 domestic university students who had participated in overseas volunteer tourism and analyzed from a phenomenological perspective based on their statements. As a result of analysis, their experiences could be categorized into three types. First, through volunteer tourism, it was possible to expand new relationships by interacting with local people and colleagues who participated, and furthermore, through activities, they could feel the emotional satisfaction of achieving self-realization and internal growth. Second, because of the positive image of volunteer tourism, there was a tendency to prefer it, and it was an opportunity to get acquainted with the local culture in that it was possible to experience the unique culture of the region. Third, short-term volunteer activities alone do not help the local community, but nevertheless, continuous attention and cooperation are necessary. Volunteer tourism was an opportunity to urge participants interest, and that it would have an impact in the future. Based on these findings, this study draws implications for academic and practical aspects.
