Dyadic Economic Dependences between Nations in Northeast Asia Region

국문 초록

국가 간 경제적 상호의존성과 분쟁의 관계에 대하여는 여러 다른 대립적 이론들이 제기되고 있다. 그럼에도 불구하고 여러 연구들은 국가 간의 비대칭적인 경제적 상호의존성 또는 일방적 의존성은 국가의 안보와 자치권에 영향을 줄 수 있다는 사실에 동의하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 동북아지역에서 국가간의 경제관계가 의존적인지 상호의존적인지를 실증적으로 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 남한, 북한, 일본 세 나라 모두가 중국에 대해 경제 관계에서 의존적인 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 실증적 연구 결과들은 중국이 정치적 목적을 위해 남한, 북한, 일본에 대하여 의존적인 경제 관계를 이용할 수 있음을 보여주고 있다.

영문 초록

There have been different theoretical views to describe the relationship between inter-state economic dependence/interdependence and national security. But there are at least an agreement that asymmetric economic interdependence or unilateral dependence threatens national security and autonomy. Therefore, this paper examined whether the economic interactions between nations in Northeast Asia region are “asymmetric” or “interdependence”. The empirical results of economic dependence between nations in Northeast Asia region show that all three nations-South Korea, North Korea, and Japan-become to depend on China in two nations’ economic relation. Thus, the empirical results indicate that all three nations’ economic dependence may open the door for possible economic sanctions from dominant nation China. Beijing may use other regional nation’s economic dependence as leverage to force political concessions from dependent nation.
