국문 초록

옥산 이우(1542-1609)는 어머니 신사임당과 형 율곡 이이에 비해 그의 행적이나 업적이 많이 알려지지 않았지만, 어머니 신사임당의 예술적 자질을 그대로 물려받아 붕당과 임진왜란으로 혼란했던 16세기 말에 뛰어난 예술적 능력으로 시(詩) 서(書) 화(畵) 금(琴)에 모두 뛰어나 ‘사절(四絶)’로 명성이 높았던 인물이다. 시(詩)에 있어서는 학문이 깊고 시정이 풍부하여 서정적인 정취가 물씬 풍기며, 서(書)에 있어서는 필세가 웅장하여 힘이 넘쳐흐르고 또한 정묘하여 보석보다도 귀히 여긴다고 칭송받고 있다. 또 옥산의 그림은 정취가 맑고 단아하며 실제와 구별이 되지 않을 정도로 섬세하여 닭이 와서 쪼았다는 일화와 함께 유명세를 타고 있다. 여기에 예술적 재능을 갖춘 그의 거문고 소리는 깊고 웅건하여 뭇사람들로 하여금 마음이 화평해지게 하였다한다. 그러나 옥산의 이러한 예술적 능력은 어머니 사임당과 형 율곡의 영향력에 가려진 이유 때문인지 지금은 전공자들이나 일부 학자들의 입에 오르내리는 정도이다. 그러나 ‘사절’로까지 칭송되어지던 예술방면에서의 옥산의 영향력은 어머니 신사임당의 영향력에 뒤지지 않을 만큼 그 예술성이 매우 높다. 이는 스스로의 피나는 노력을 통해서 그의 예술적 재능에 덕(德)이 합쳐졌기 때문에 가능했던 일이었을 것이다. 모든 예술작품에는 그 작가의 재능만 담기지 않는다. 작가 자신의 몸과 마음, 그리고 생각, 인격까지 모두 담기게 된다. 그래서 예술가의 작품은 곧 그 작가를 대신하게 되는 것이다. 옥산의 예술작품과 마주하면서 옥산이 품었던 마음과 올바른 인격까지 같이 느낄 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 한다.

영문 초록

Although his past and achievement were not so much more known than his mother Shin Saimdang or his brother Yoolkok Lee Yi, Oksan Lee Woo (1542-1609) was an artist who was famous for poetry, paintings and calligraphic works and Qin music, known as one of the Four Great Masters, since he inherited the artistic talents from his mother and showed a great artistic ability in the 16th century in which our country fell into confusion with a fraction and the Japanese invasion in 1592. In poetry, the profound scholarship and the fertile poetic emotion give lots of lyrical flavor; in calligraphic works, the magnificent stroke of brush is full of vigor and exquisiteness, highly reputed as more noble than jewels. In addition, his paintings are in popularity, along with an anecdote that a hen pecked at one of his paintings, since they have a clear and graceful taste and a delicacy to the degree that cannot be distinguished from the real sights. Furthermore, his geomungo, or the six-stringed Korean zither, gave a deep and vigorous sound, soothing everyone’s troubled thoughts. But these artistic abilities of his are only known to a small group such as some specialists and scholars, partly because, if ever, the influences of his mother and his brother are too strong enough to hide his achievements. In practice, however, his works have a great artistic value not second to his mother, since he was even praised as one of the Four Great Masters. This could be done through combination of his artistic talents and virtues provided by his desperate efforts. Every piece of artistic works contains not only the talents of the artist, but also the body and mind, thoughts and personality of his. Therefore, that piece can represent the artist. Facing with the artistic works of Oksan, we can feel the aspects of his warm heart and the righteous personality.
