국문 초록

본 고는 헤르베르트 마르쿠제의 사상, 특히 ‘1차원적 인간’을 개괄적으로 이해하고 21세기 현대의 시각으로 반성해 보고자 하는데 초점을 맞추고 있다. 마르쿠제는 프랑크푸르트 학파를 대표하는 인물 중의 한 사람으로 잘 알려져 있다. 프랑크푸르트 학파 학자들의 견해는 사회에 대한 비판인 동시에 문명에 대한 통렬한 비판이 주를 이루고 있다. 비판이론의 기본 원리는 사회를 구성하고 있는 인간 개인의 물질적이고 정신적인 삶을 사회생활이라는 전체성에서부터 파악하고 그 삶을 이해하려는 데에 있었다. 마르쿠제는 이 맥락에 잘 부합하는 시각을 창안해 내어 현대 사회를 날카롭게 비판하였다. 그는 1960년대 미국 대학생들의 학생 운동의 정신적 지주였기도 했다. 마르쿠제의 ‘1차원적 인간’은 기술이 현대 선진산업사회에 어떠한 해독을 끼치는지를 종합적으로 잘 설명하고 있다. 마르크스주의를 바탕으로 해서 현대 산업 문명과 그에 파묻힌 인간성을 비판하고 나아가 재구성하고자 했던 것이다. 비록 그의 시도들은 21세기 현재의 시각으로 보아서는 ‘기술’이라는 제한된 관점의 측면이 있었음에도 불구하고 매우 의미가 깊었다고 할 수 있다. 그는 1960년대 서구의 신좌파 운동을 견인하기도 하였다. 21세기 현대의 시각에서 보면 마르쿠제의 ‘1차원적 인간’ 이론은 현대 사회를 정확하게 설명하는 것이라고 보기는 어렵다. 21세기는 ‘기술’ 보다는 ‘문화’라는 측면이 보다 더 부각되는 시대인 까닭이다. 그러나 마르쿠제의 이론은 결국 현대 문화의 어두운 면까지 보게 해 준다는 측면이 있다. 개인의 욕망과 취향은 상당 부분 문화가 만들어 내는 산물들과 직결되어 있고, 가상과 실제는 공공연하게 혼동되고 있다. 현대 문화는 자본과 대중적 권위라는 사슬에 매어져 있는 상태이며, 기술은 이 상황을 적극적으로 부추기고 있다. 21세기 현대인들이 사회를 돌아가게 만드는 가장 주요한 도구로 기술을 계속 활용하는 한에 있어서, 마르쿠제의 견해들은 지금도 여전히 많은 시사점들을 제공하고 있다.

영문 초록

This paper focuses on understanding Herbert Marcuse’s ideas, particularly ‘one dimensional man’ from a reflection of 21st century perspective. Marcuse is a well known man as one of the representative figures of the Frankfurt school. The views of them are mainly about criticism of society and civilization. The basic principle of critical theory was to understand the material and mental life of the individuals who are the members of society. Marcuse has sharply criticized post-industrial society by creating his own view that is compatible with this context. He was the spiritual pillar of American university students political activism in the 1960s. Marcuse’s idea of ‘one dimensional man’ describes in general what technology does to modern industrial societies. Based on Marxism, he wanted to criticize and reorganize modern industrial civilization and humanity. His attempts are very meaningful in spite of the limited view of technology from the current perspective of 21st century. He also led the Western New Left movement in the 1960s. From a current perspective in the 21st century, Marcuse’s theory of ‘one dimensional man’ is hardly an accurate description of modern industrial society. This is because the 21st century is more about culture than technology. However, in the end, Marcuse’s theory allows us to see the dark side of contemporary culture. As we all know, individual desires and tastes are linked in large part to the products of culture, and virtual and real are confusing. Today’s culture is tied to the chain of capital and mass authority, and technology is actively encouraging this situation. As long as people in the 21st century continue to use technology as the most important instrument to maintain contemporary society, Marcuse’s ideas are still working and have many implications for today.
