지그프리트 겐테의 조선 기행문에 투영된 근대 지리학자의 시선

국문 초록

본고에서는 독일의 지리학자 겸 기자였던 지그프리트 겐테가 1901년 조선을 방문하고 작성한 기행문을 분석하여 제국주의와 과학적 경험주의의 속성이 어떻게 투영되었는지 살펴보고자 하였다. 겐테는 근대 지리학의 전통에 따라 미지의 세계를 각종 관측 도구와 지도를 이용하여 측정하며 지리 정보를 수집하였다. 겐테의 조선 기행문은 선행 서양여행자의 기행문에 비해 객관성을 반영하고 있다고 평가되기도 하는데 그 이유는 지역의 경관을 해석하면서 인간의 활동과 자연환경의 상호작용에 기반한 지리적 사고를 반영시켰기 때문이다. 그는 관찰 대상과 관찰자 사이의 상호 응시를 인식하였고 자신의 위치성을 객관적인 관찰자로 표방하였으나 이는 외부자적 관점에서 과학주의 태도를 견지하도록 함으로써 토착민의 환경관을 인정하지 않도록 이끌었다. 이와 같은 겐테의 시선은 제국주의로부터 자유로울 수 없었는데 당현금광 방문에서 나타나듯이 그는 후발 제국주의 국가였던 독일의 경제적 이익을 극대화하기 위한 방안을 찾아보고자 하였다. 겐테의 한반도 기록은 근대 지리학자의 탐험 욕구와 지리적 상상력을 보여주는 동시에 독일의 제국주의 팽창의 도구적 역할을 수행하였음을 나타낸다.

영문 초록

This paper examines how the attributes of imperialism and scientific empiricism were reflected in the travel essay of Korea written by German geographer and journalist Siegfried Genthe, who visited the Korean Peninsula in 1901. Genthe collected geographic information by measuring the unknown world using various bservation tools and maps according to the tradition of Western modern geography. Genthe’s travel accounts of Korea are regarded objective compared to those of the preceding Western travelers, mainly because he reflected geographical thinking based on the interactions between human activities and physical environments when interpreting landscapes. Although he presented, recognizing the reciprocal gaze between the observer and the observed, his positionality as a rational observer, this made him keep a scientific attitude from an outsider’s point of view, which let him disregard the indigenous people’s own view of environment. It is undeniable that German imperialism is reflected in Genthe’s gaze. As shown by his visit to Danghyun gold mine, Genthe sought to find ways to maximize economic interests of his native country. Genthe’s accounts of explorations of the Korean Peninsula reveal a modern geographer’s desire for exploration and geographic imagination, while playing an instrumental role in Germany’s imperialistic ventures.
