김사량의 소설 『물오리섬』에 대한 문학지리적 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 김사량의 단편소설 『물오리섬』의 작중 장소와 경관 재현 양상이 갖는 의미를 문학지리적으로 분석하는데 목적을 둔다. 『물오리섬』은 일제강점기 말기에 대동강변과 물오리섬의 경관을 문학적으로 재현하여 식민지 조선인의 삶과 애환, 정체성을 표현한 작품으로, 문학지리적으로 중요한 텍스트라고 판단된다. 반 매넌(van Manen) 현상학을 활용한 텍스트 분석을 통하여 다음과 같은 5개의 주제를 도출하였다. 첫째, 평양 인근의 대동강 주변 경관은 조선의 향토적인 문화 경관으로 재현되었다. 둘째, 물오리섬은, 일제강점기라는 부조리한 현실을 차단하고 이를 극복할 수 있다는 희망과 의지를 재현한 장소라는 의미를 가졌다. 셋째, 범람에 취약한 하중도라는 지형적 특성을 가진 물오리섬은, 일제강점기 말기의 엄혹하고 부조리한 사회구조에 대한 은유를 재현하는 장소이기도 하다. 넷째, 물오리섬에 남아 있는 미륵과 순이 부부의 흔적과 대동강은, 일제강점기 말기에도 현실의 극복이 언젠가는 이루어지리라는 희망이 재현된 경관으로서의 성격도 가진다. 마지막으로 물오리섬에는 여성을 외부 세계와 격리시키고 ‘여성적’인 성역할을 부여하는 가부장적인 성역할과 젠더의식 또한 재현되었다. 이러한 결과는 문학작품의 서사구조와 시대적·사회적 의미에 대한 심층적·비판적 접근이라는 문학지리학의 의의와 가능성에 대한 논의와 시사점을 제공한다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to interpret the representation of the places and landscapes in Sa-ryang Kim’s novel Muloriseom Island in the perspective of literary geography. It is a significant literary geographical text that describes Korean people’s life and identity by including landscapes of the Daedonggang River and the Muloriseom Island during the Japanese colonial rule. The text of Muloriseom Islandwas analyzed using van Manen’s phenomenological research methods. As a result, five themes were drawn. First, the places around the Daedonggang River were represented as the cultural landscape of the Korean local identities. Second, the Muloriseom Island represented Korean people’s hope to overcome absurdities during the era of Japanese colonial rule. Third, the Muloriseom Island also represented the extremely severe social conditions in the era of Japanese colonial rule. Fourth, the traces of Mireuk and Soon-yi within the novel represent the possibility that Korean people’s hope for a better life may eventually come true. Finally, the Muloriseom Island was interpreted as the place of patriarchal gender roles. These results suggest the need for meaningful discussions pertaining to the literary geographical approach toward the literary and social meanings of literature.
