촌락 공간을 둘러싼 재현과 담론의 특징

국문 초록

오늘날 촌락 공간은 농업 중심의 사회에서 서비스 지향적 사회로 변모하고 있다. 이에 여전히 촌락성은 자연환경, 전통, 문화 등 여전히 특정 사실들에 기반을 두지만, 점차 촌락 내·외부의 여러 행위자들이 이해관계에 따라 전유, 동원하는 사회적 구성물이자 재현된 이미지가 되어 가고 있다. 이에 따라 촌락성을 둘러싼 다양한 담론이 누구에 의해 어떤 목적에서 어떤 재현으로 생산, 소비되는지가 촌락 연구의 핵심 화두가 되고 있다. 본 논문은 전라남도 담양군을 사례로 담양의 촌락성이 어떻게 재현되고 있는지, 이의 담론적 특징이 무엇인지, 이런 담론의 생산에 관련된 행위자는 무엇인지, 그리고 촌락성을 둘러싼 이들의 재현의 정치는 어떤 문제나 함의를 갖는지에 대해 고찰했다. 방법론으로서 담양을 재현한 주요 여행 텍스트를 수집, 범주화한 후 내용과 담론 분석하는 방식을 채택했다. 분석 결과 담양의 촌락성 재현에는 전통을 강조하는 토착주의 담론, 전원적 낭만주의 담론, 지역 발전주의 담론, 생태적 환경주의 담론, 도시 중심적 식민주의 담론이 작동하고 있었으며, 이들은 상호 간 연관성과 모순을 가지면서 촌락 현실의 특정 측면을 은폐하거나 강조하는 경향이 있다.

영문 초록

Contemporary rural space is reshaping itself from agriculture-driven society to service-oriented one. Although rurality is still characterized by factual components such natural environment, tradition and culture, it becomes a social construct that various actors appropriate and mobilize for their interests. As the politics of representation becomes salient recently, many rural studies focus on the ways in which actors produce specific representations of rurality discourses via various materials. With the case of Damyang-gun in Jeonnam Province, this study investigates what kinds of meanings are imbibed in rurality discourses, what actors are involved in their production, and what problems and implications could be drawn from the politics of representation over rurality. By conducting a content and discourse analysis onto textual materials, this study found out that Damyang’s ruralities are based on five discourses, including traditional nativism, rural idyllic romanticism, regional developmentalism, ecological environmentalism, and urbanist colonialism. Often mutually intertwined and contradicted, these discourses somehow concealed or overemphasized specific aspects of rural reality.
