의료비지출과 수명/건강의 관계에 대한 실증분석

국문 초록

의료비지출이 수명과 건강에 미치는 영향을 지역패널자료를 이용하여 실증 분석하였다. 수명을 대표하는 변수로 사망률을 사용하였으며, 건강을 대표하는 변수로는 고등학교 남녀 학생의 신장 자료를 이용하였다. 의료비지출이 사망률에 미치는 영향은 소득이 증가함에 따라 그 반응이 줄어드는 경향이 있으므로 의료비지출과 사망률 간에 비선형적인 관계를 추정식에 고려하였다. 의료비지출과 사망률의 관계는 유의적인 음(-)의 관계를 나타내고 있으며, 의료비지출에 대한 사망률 탄력성은 -0.06 ~ -0.15 정도로 추정되었다. 의료비지출은 사망률 감소에 기여하였음을 밝히고 있다. 의료비지출과 청소년 건강의 관계도 상당한 시차를 거쳐 영향이 있으므로 이를 추정식에 고려하여 추정하였다. 의료비지출과 고등학생의 키의 관계에서 보면 상당한 시차(8~10년)를 가지고 유의적인 양(+)의 관계가 추정되었다. 이는 남녀 고등학생 모두에서 공히 나타나는 결과이다. 이러한 실증분석 결과는 의료비지출이 신체적 건강이나 수명에 긍정적인 영향을 주고 있음을 의미하며, 건강에 대한 의료비지출의 영향은 상당한 시차를 가지고 긍정적인 영향을 주고 있음을 알 수 있다.

영문 초록

We exploit regional panel data with 15 regions to analyse empirically how medical expense affects health and life span. Mortality rate is used as life span variable and the height of high school students is used as health variable. Since it is observed that medical expenses are nonlinearly associated with mortality rate, the nonlinear relationship between medical expenses and mortality rate is taken into account in estimating the effect of medical expenses on mortality rate. We find a significantly negative relationship between medical expense and mortality rate and the elasticity of mortality rate with respect to medical expense is estimated to be -0.06~-0.15. It shows that medical expense has contributed to reducing mortality rate. The relationship between medical expense and the height of high school students is estimated to be significantly positive but with some lags (8-10years). This result holds for both male and female high school students. Empirical results show that medical expense has a positive impact on both physical health and life span but its positive impact on health occurs with some lags.
