이공계 대학 글쓰기 교육 현황과 개선 방안 연구

국문 초록

최근 과학기술 분야의 중요성이 증대되고 관련 영역이 확대됨에 따라 이공계 학생들을 대상으로 특화된 글쓰기 교과의 중요성이 증대되고 있다. 몇몇 학교에서 이공계 학생들을 위한 교양 글쓰기 교재 개발도 신속하게 진행되고 있다. 서강대학교는 2019년 1학기부터 ‘자연과학 글쓰기’라는 명칭으로 이공계 학생들을 대상으로 한 교양교과를 신설하고 이를 위해 새롭게 개발한 교재인 『자연계 글쓰기』를 활용하기 시작했다. 본 연구는 서강대학교 ‘자연계 글쓰기’ 수업과 교재를 중심으로 이공계 글쓰기 교육의 현황을 검토해보고 앞으로 교양 글쓰기 수업이 나아가야 할 방향성과 개선 방안을 모색하고자 한다. 본고에서 강조하는 것은 전통적으로 인문계에 속한 영역이라고 인식되었던 글쓰기/읽기와 이공계 지식, 사고체계를 어떻게 단일한 커리큘럼으로 조화시킬 것인가를 선결 과제로 삼아야 한다는 것이다. 또한 이공계 대상 교양 글쓰기 수업의 성공적인 운영을 위해서는 다각적인 학제간 융합 활동이 이루어질 필요성이 있다. 이를 위해선 학과 간의 적극적인 협력 관계를 통해 기초 교양 글쓰기 과목들이 전공과 밀접하게 연결되어야 할 필요성도 꾸준히 제기된다. 본고에서 특히 2019년 1학기에 처음으로 현장에 활용된 서강대학교 『자연계 글쓰기』 교재가 갖고 있는 오류와 모순점을 세밀하게 지적한다. 현재 개발된 교재의 오류과 개선방안을 찾아내 적극적으로 학계에 제출함으로써, 새로운 시대적 요청에 부합하기 위해 이공계 글쓰기가 나야가야 할 방향을 제시하고자 한다. 이는 인문사회계가 대다수의 교양 글쓰기 교강사와 필자들을 차지하고 있는 현실 속에서, 전공 연계적 수업을 지향해야 한다는 과제가 얼마나 큰 난제로 다가오는지 보여주는 증좌이기도 하다. 본고에서 열거한 문제 외에도 이공계 글쓰기 수업은 아직 현장에서 많은 어려움과 의문을 야기하고 있는 분야다. 그러나 대학 교육과 연구 현장에서 융합적 사고를 점점 더 강력하게 요청하고 있다는 사실을 고려해볼 때 학제간 융합 프로젝트로서 이공계 글쓰기의 효과적인 구성과 운영에 대한 연구는 앞으로도 더욱 확대될 필요가 있다.

영문 초록

Recently, as the importance of science and technology has increased and related fields have expanded, the importance of writing subjects for science and engineering students has been increasing. In some universities, the development of textbooks for academic writing in natural sciences and engineering students is proceeding rapidly. Sogang University has established a liberal arts curriculum for science and engineering students in the first semester of 2019 under the title of University Writing for Science and Engineering Students and began to use the newly developed textbook. This study examines the current status of science and engineering writing education centered on Sogang University teaching materials and textbook, and looks for direction and improvement plan for writing education in liberal education. In this article, I seek to combine writing, reading, science and engineering knowledge and thought systems, which were traditionally recognized as areas of the humanities, into a single curriculum. And In order to successfully operate liberal arts classes for science and engineering students, there is a need for multifaceted interdisciplinary fusion activities. In order to do this, the necessity for the basic writing courses in liberal arts to be linked closely with the major has been constantly raised through active cooperation between the departments. In this article, I points out in detail the errors and contradictions of University Writing for Science and Engineering Students, the writing textbook of Sogang University, which was first used in the first semester of 2019. By presenting errors and improvement plans of currently developed textbooks and actively submitting them to academia, I would like to suggest directions for science and engineering writing to meet the demands of the new era. In addition to the problems listed in this article, science and engineering writing classes are still challenging and questionable in the field. However, given the increasingly strong demand for convergent thinking in college education and research, research on the effective construction and operation of science and engineering writing as an interdisciplinary fusion project needs to be further expanded.
