19세기 ‘地球’와 ‘世界’에 대한 시각적 인식

국문 초록

19세기 集玉齋 소장서적이 담고 있는 지구 및 세계에 대한 인식은 다층적이었다. 고대적 역사지리, 주역식 지리, 천하도, 풍수지리, 천동설적 지구관, 지동설적 지구관 등의 관점이 공존하고 있다는 의미이다. 그 가운데 지동설적 지구관의 지리서적으로 서구인 저술의 한역서가 가장 과학적, 근대적이었다. 이 연구는 그 가운데 『地球說略』(1856)의 내용적 특징과 의미를 살폈다. 미국 선교사 웨이(Richard Quanterman Way, 1819-1895, 중국명 褘理哲)가 그의 『地球圖說『(Illustrated Geography, 1848)을 보강하여 낸 이 책은, 선교적, 계몽적 목적을 가지고 지구원형의 증거 및 지구자전을 경험론적 인식으로 알기 쉽게 서술했다. 또한 세계 67개국의 위치, 생활, 문명 수준을 소개하고 동물과 문명의 이미지를 사실적으로 전달하면서, 서구의 교육시설과 출판문화가 중국보다 우수한 점을 비교적 서술로 보여주었고, 성서적 이야기를 시각적으로 전달하고자 루벤스(Peter Paul Rubens)의 걸작을 삽도로 사용했다. 『지구설략』은 1860년 일본에서 재간행하면서 선교적 측면을 약화시켰고 지리 교과서로 사용했다. 이 책이 보여주는 지구에 대한 인식의 방식과 서술방식은 중국에서의 이후 근대지리서와 한국의 근대기 지리서 서술로 그 맥락이 이어진다. 한국의 근대지리교과서나 매체의 서술은 조선시대 학자들(홍대용, 이규경, 최한기 등)의 그것이 아니라 서구과학서의 경험론적 관점을 따른다는 점에서 이 책이 가지는 역사적 위치는 명확하다.

영문 초록

Awareness of the earth and the world was multi-layered at Jipokjae, the Joseon loyal library in the nineteenth century. Copernican theory was the most scientific and modern among them. Diqiushuolue, or Illustrated and Explained Geography, was the representative and relatively early published book written by Richard Quanterman Way(1819-1895) and translated into Chinese. Diqiushuolue shows empirical recognition about the shape and the movement of the earth, which was convincing enough to overcome traditional complex discussions about the earth and some sort of doubts. It also explains the locations, lifestyles and civilization-degrees of 67 countries in the world, which emphasized the relative superiority of the Western educational facilities and publishing culture over China. The illustrations in this book conveys the world s animals and developed civilization realistically and visually, sometimes even the masterpiece of Peter Paul Rubens which depicts a biblical story. This book was influential on Chinese geography books in the future. In Japan of 1860, Diqiushuolue t was reissued and used as a textbook, while its missionary aspect was reduced. It would be said that Jipokjae included the substantial base in the modern East Asian knowledge and geography education, as Diqiushuolue was influential on Korean modern geography books.
