국문 초록

승영사찰은 승려들의 예불공간과 군영공간을 갖춘 사찰로 조선시대 후기에는 산성 등 주요 방어 거점이 되는 곳의 사찰을 의미하며, 사찰을 세우고 승려들이 머물면서 산성방어를 담당하는 기능을 하였다. 이러한 사찰은 산성 내 수구나 성문, 암문 근처에 입지하여 성곽 내에서 취약한 부분을 수비하고, 승군이 훈련하는 곳으로 각종 무기를 제조하거나 보관하는 전투의 기지로서의 역할도 하였다. 따라서 조선시대 승영사찰에 거주하는 승도는 임무에 따라 역할이 나뉘므로 승영사찰은 산성과 매우 밀접한 관계를 가지고 있다. 북한산성 내 승영사찰의 공간 구성은 대부분 사동중정을 중심으로 폐쇄적인 공간을 형성하는 전각을 구성하고 있는 반면 일부는 지형적 특성에 맞게 다른 공간배치 유형을 보이고 있다. 승영시설과 예불공간이 분리되었으며, 특히 승영사찰의 독특한 기능적 특징인 군기창고의 공간이 추가적으로 형성되었다. 화약무기 등을 보관·관리하는 군영공간의 형성이 가장 큰 차이점이라 할 수 있으며, 이러한 특징은 중흥사와 부왕사지에서 명확히 드러나며 이는 남한산성의 한흥사지에서도 유사하게 확인된다.

영문 초록

Military Temple is a temple that comprises the Buddhist service space for priests and the military camp space and it referred to the temple located in major defensive bases such as mountain fortresses in the late Joseon Dynasty period. Once the temple was built, priests stayed in the temple to protect the fortress. This type of temple also played the role of the battle station located near the water outlet, front gate, or hidden gate inside the fortress to guard vulnerable part of the fortress, train priest soldiers, produce and store various weapons. As priests who stayed in the Military Temple during the Joseon Dynasty period were given different roles depending on their duties, the Military Temple had a very close relationship with the fortress. The spatial composition of the Military Temple inside Bukhansanseong Fortress reflects various historic contexts of the Buddhism during the Joseon Dynasty after the 17th century. Most temples have buildings that form a closed space around the inner court in the center. The priest soldier facilities and Buddhist service space were separated, and particularly, the temple had an additional space armory space, which is the unique functional feature of the Military Temple. The formation of the military camp space to store and manage gunpowder weapons and so on is the biggest difference, and such characteristics clearly appear in Jungheungsa Temple and the Buwangsa Temple site, and similar exmaples are also found in the Hangheungsa Temple site in Namhansanseong Fortress.
