국문 초록

이 논문의 목적은 영문법에 있어서 격식체와 비격식체를 여러 분야로 나누어 그 차이들을 연구하는 것이다. 이 논문은 영어 어휘의 격식체와 비격식체에 관하여는 많은 연구가 이루어졌지만, 영문법과 관련하여서는 체계적인 연구가 이루어지지 않아서, 본 논문에서는 일관성을 유지하기 위하여 여러 문법 자료에 근거하여 영문법의 여러 분야, 즉 관계사, 동사 시제, 접속사, 조동사, 양화사, 수동구문, 전치사, 동명사, 가정법, 주어-동사 일치, 분사구문 등에서 격식체와 비격식체에 관하여 분석하였다. 이 연구를 통하여 위에 언급된 각 분야에서 격식체와 비격식체 사이에는 형태상의 차이가 있었고, 이제까지 문법적으로 틀린 것으로 간주되는 것들 중에서 비격식체가 있었다. 또한 격식체와 비격식체의 2분법적 구분뿐만 아니라, 격식체에 더 가까운 것과 비격식체에 더 가까운 것도 존재한다는 현상과, 유상성(iconicity)의 양의 원리에 속하는 대우어법을 위반하는 것들도 발견할 수 있었다. 앞으로 각급 학교의 영문법 교육에서도 주어진 상황에 적절하게 격식체나 비격식체, 또는 더 격식적인 것이나 덜 격식적인 문체를 사용하는 방법도 가르쳐야 할 것이다.

영문 초록

The purpose of this study is to explore the differences of formality and informality in thirteen areas in English grammar. Since there has been a lot of research about formality and informality in English vocabulary, but there has not been any systematic research about formality and informality in English grammar, this paper analyzes formality and informality in relative clauses, verb tenses, conjunctions, modals, quantifiers, passive constructions, prepositions, gerunds, subjunctives, and subject-verb agreement based on English grammar data. To perform such analyses previous research about formality and informality was done, after which formality and informality in the above-mentioned areas in grammar were addressed. Through this research, the differences of formality and informality in the above-mentioned areas can be found and some sentences which has been grammatically wrong come to be known to be informal ones. It is also found out that there are fuzzy phenomena in formality and informality, for example, more formal and less formal, as well as the dichotomy of formality and informality. Students must be taught formality and informality in English grammar. Also, they must be taught how to use formal and informal sentences according to a given situation.
