노경식 희곡에 나타난 한국전쟁과 여성의 재현 방식 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 한국희곡에 나타난 ‘한국전쟁의 기억과 재현의 정치학’을 고찰하고자 하는 연구의 일환으로서, 한국전쟁을 다룬 한국희곡의 대표작으로 꼽히는 노경식의 <달집> 속에 나타난 한국전쟁이라는 역사적 사건과 여성의 재현 방식을 살펴보고자 하였다. 본고는 한국전쟁 이후 국가의 근대적 기획 하에서 행해진 ‘강요된 기억 과 망각’, 즉 한국전쟁에 대한 ‘기억의 정치’라는 억압적이고도 일방적인 ‘기억의 역사화 과정’이 전쟁을 재현한 희곡 작품들 속에 고스란히 담지되어 있다는 시각을 전제로 하였다. 이러한 이유로 본 연구는 기존의 연구 시각에서 한 걸음 더 나아가 <달집>을 비판적으로 재고하기 위해 ‘신역사주의’의 시각과 ‘문화비평적’ 관점을 토대로 텍스트 자체의 미학적 의미보다는 텍스트가 창작되고 유통된 사회문화적 맥락과 지배담론, ‘역사와 여성’을 바라보고 재현해내는 방식에 담긴 문화 정치적 의미를 중심으로 연구를 진행하였다. 그 결과 노경식의 <달집>은 당대 박정희 정권이 유포하고 기획했던 ‘민족’ 담론과의 교섭 속에서 한국전쟁을 ‘민족 수난 서사’로 재현하고 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 식민지 경험과 분단, 한국전쟁이라는 각기 다른 지형의 역사적 사건을 민족 수난사라는 동질적인 연장선상에서 바라보고 재현해낸 시선 속에는 ‘고난의 역사’, ‘수난의 역사’라는 과거의 경험과 기억을 끊임없이 환기시킴으로써 집단의 수난의 식을 자극하고 ‘한의 정념’을 강조하여, 이를 통해 ‘민족’이라는 ‘기억의 공동체’, 상상의 공동체’를 만들고 국민을 사상적으로 통합시키고자 했던 당대 정권의 문화 정치적 전략이 내재화되어 있음을 유추할 수 있었다. 이와 더불어 오랜 시간 거대 역사에서 소외되었던 하위주체(subaltern)로서의 여성을 서사의 주체로 내세움으로 써 ‘아래로부터의 역사’를 담아내고자 했던 작가적 욕망 역시 당대의 지배 담론에 포섭되어, 가부장적이고 남성적인 시선을 벗지 못한 채 이중적이고 모순적인 ‘민족 알레고리로서’ 여성의 표상을 전유하고 재산출 하였음을 확인하였다. 이처럼 본 연구는 그간 민중의 끈질긴 생명력 혹은 민족의 강인성을 형상화한 작품이라 줄곧 평가받아왔던 노경식의 <달집>을 당대의 정치 문화적 지형과 이데올로기의 토대 위에서 조금은 다른, 비판적인 시각으로 재고하고자 하였다. 이를 통해 ‘아래로부터의 역사’를 담아내고자 했던 한 작가의 욕망이 전쟁의 기억과 민족 수난의 뼈아픈 ‘역사’를 이용하여 정치적 기반으로 삼고자 했던 당대 정권의 억압적 이데올로기 속에서 어떻게 포획되고 변형되었는지, 그 맥락을 유추해볼 수 있었다. 그리고 이러한 분석 속에서 그간 우리가 얼마나 비판적 성찰 없이 관습적인 시각으로 ‘역사’, ‘민족’, ‘여성’을 바라보고 기록해왔으며, 그것을 재현한 작품들 역 시 무비판적으로 받아들였는가에 대해 재고해볼 수 있었다. 이러한 맥락에서 한국전쟁이라는 ‘역사’를 재현한 희곡을 완성된 텍스트 자체로 바라보기보다는, 다양한 담론과의 교섭 속에서 당대의 문화적 기억을 재구성하고 전승하는 ‘기억의 공간’으로서 바라보고자 한 이러한 시도는 아직은 미미하고 부족 하지만, 희곡을 바라보는 시각과 연구의 외연을 넓힐 수 있는 의미있는 작업의 발판이 되리라 기대한다.

영문 초록

As a research to figure out the “politics of memories and reproductions of the Korean War” in Korean plays, this study set out to examine the historical event of the Korean War and the ways that women were reproduced in Dal-jib by Noh Gyeong-sik. It is one of the greatest Korean plays about the war. The premise of the study was that the suppressive and one-sided “process of historicizing memories” called the “politics of memories of the Korean War,” which involved “forced memories and oblivion” under the government’s modern plan after the Korean War, was reflected undamaged in plays reproducing the war. For this reason, the study took a further step from the old research viewpoint and focused on the social and cultural contexts and dominant discourses in which texts were created and distributed and the cultural and political meanings of the ways that “history and women” were looked at and reproduced rather than the aesthetic meanings of texts themselves based on the viewpoint of “new historicism” and the perspective of “cultural criticism.”The findings show that Noh’s Dal-jib reproduced the Korean War as a “narrative of Korean people’s suffering” in its negotiation with the “national” discourse distributed and planned by the Park Chung-hee regime those days. The play’s viewpoint of looking at and reproducing different historic events in different topographies including the colonization by Japan, division of Korea, and the Korean War on the same extension of the history of Korean people’s suffering has the cultural and political strategy of the regime internalized in it. The strategy aimed to stimulate their collective consciousness of suffering by constantly arousing their experiences and memories of the past involving the “history of hardship” and “history of suffering,” form a “community of memories and imagination” called “people” by emphasizing the “sentiment of resentment,” and unit the people ideologically. In addition, the author wished to reflect “history from below” by presenting women as the subaltern that had been alienated from huge history for many years as the subject of his narrative, but his wish was won over by the dominant discourse of the times. He thus failed to escape from the patriarchal and masculine viewpoint, holding and reproducing the representation of women a dual and contradictory “national allegory.”The present study tried to reconsider Noh’s Dal-jib, which had been considered as a work to embody the persistent life force of the people or the tenacity of Korean people, in a little bit different and critical viewpoint based on the political and cultural topography and ideology those days. It was able to estimate the context in which the desire of an author trying to reflect “history from below” was captured and altered by the suppressive ideology of the Park Chung-hee regime that took advantage of the memories of war and the painful “history” of Korean people s suffering and used it as its political base. This analysis helped to reconsider how we had looked at and recorded “history,” “people” and “women” in a conventional viewpoint without critical self- examination and accepted works reproducing them with no criticism. In this context, it is still an insignificant and insufficient attempt to look at a play reproducing the “history” of the Korean War as a “space of memories” to reorganize and transmit the cultural memories of the times in their negotiation with various discourses rather than a complete text itself, but this attempt is expected to serve as a foundation for meaningful works to expand the viewpoint of play and extension of its research.
