신미경의 비누 조각에 나타난 메멘토 모리의 변용과 재해석

국문 초록

본 논문은 영원과 순간, 생성과 소멸, 창조와 쇠락을 숙고하는 신미경의 비누 조각에 나타난 메멘토 모리(Memento Mori)의 철학적, 미학적 의미를 살펴보는 것을 목표로 한다. 첫째, 신미경의 비누 조각은 인간의 욕망과 허무, 애착과 체념을 동시에 담아내어 바니타스(vanistas)와 바니테(vanité)가 공존하는 삶을 성찰한다. 비누로 형상화된 도자기, 거울, 조각상 등과 같은 오브제들은 추상적이고 형이상학적인 죽음과 시간성을 현존하는 물질로 재현해 인간 존재에 대한 근원적 사유를 유도한다. 둘째, 비누로 재현된 폐허 풍경과 유물들은 삶과 죽음의 공존을 탐구하고 다양성을 지향하는 낭만주의 미학과 그 맥을 같이 한다. 셋째, 마모되고 사라지기에 영원한 가치를 소유하게 되는 유물의 이중성을 드러내는 비누 조각은 실존을 가능하게 하는 유한성의 역설을 이해하게 돕는다. 또한, 확정적으로 고정되지 않는 아토포스(Atopos)와 같은 예술의 본질을 사유하고 시간성과 인간 존재의 의미를 탐구한다. 본 연구를 통해 뫼비우스의 띠(Möbius strip)와 같은 생성과 소멸의 관계를 숙고하고, 세계 속 존재의 의미를 형성해가는 신미경의 독자적인 예술 세계의 가치를 확인하는 한편 메멘토 모리에 대한 성찰이 동시대 미술에서는 어떠한 방식으로 재현되고 있는지 이해할 수 있었다.

영문 초록

This thesis aimed to examine the philosophical and aesthetic meanings of Memento Mori shown in the soap sculptures by Meekyoung Shin considering the eternity and moment, formation and extinction, and creation and decline. First, the soap sculptures by Meekyoung Shin introspect the life coexisting with vanistas and vanite by containing humans’ desire, futility, attachment, and resignation at the same time. The objects represented with soap such as pottery, mirror, and sculpture induce the fundamental thinking of human beings by reproducing the abstract and metaphysical death and temporality with the existing material. Second, the ruined scene and relics reproduced with soap have a thread of connection with the romantic aesthetics that explores the coexistence of life and death, and also aims for the diversity. Third, the soap sculptures that reveal the duality of relics that possess the eternal value as they are worn out and disappear, are helpful for understanding the paradox of finitude that makes the existence possible. Also, on top of considering the essence of arts like Atopos that is not definitely fixed, the meanings of temporality and human beings are explored. This study not only considered the relationship between formation and extinction just like the Möbius strip and verified the value of the independent art world of Meekyoung Shin forming the meanings of beings in the world, but also understood how the introspection of Memento Mori would be reproduced in the contemporary art.
