조낭 따라나타(Jo-nang Tāranātha)의 인도 딴뜨릭 불교 계보사와 여성 성취자 전기

국문 초록

인도 딴뜨릭 불교의 역사와 계보 그리고 그 속에서 성취자들의 전기가 풍부하게 포함되어 있는 티벳불교 조낭파 승려 따라나타(Tāranātha, 1575～1635)의 역사 문헌들을 고찰하였다. 조낭 따라나타의 불교사 문헌은 세계 불교학계에서 그동안 많은 주목을 받아왔음에도, 이에 대해 국내에서는 거의 소개된 바가 없어서, 그의 문헌을 통해 인도 딴뜨릭 불교의 역사를 새롭게 이해하는 의의가 있다. 본 연구에서 핵심적으로 주목하는 내용은 그의 문헌에서 여성 성취 자들의 전기가 높은 비중으로 다뤄지고 있는 점이다. 따라나타는 학승 이자 딴뜨릭 수행자이기도 했는데, 그의 인도인 스승들에게 여성 성취 자들의 이야기를 구전으로 전해 받아 기록하였던 것이다. 그의 대표적인 역사문헌 중 7가지 전승(까밥뒨댄)과 깐하의 전기(까나빼 남타 르) 등을 중심으로 인도 딴뜨릭 불교의 계보 및 그 속에서 여성의 위치와 활동 등을 조명해 보았다. 우선, 7가지 전승 계보 속의 요기니에는 돔비요기니, 쉬리수카, 빌라시야바즈라, 그리고 디나까라가 있으며, 이들의 전기를 통해 그 위상과 성취의 능력 등을 확인할 수 있다. 깐하의 전기에서는 주요 여성제 자로 메칼라와 까나칼라 자매, 그리고 반데가 있고 이들 모두 각각 높은 딴뜨릭 요가의 경지를 성취한 인물이었다. 한편, 딴뜨릭 남성 성취자들의 전기 속에 거의 빠지지 않는 여성 스승들 또한 빼놓을 수 없는 주요 인물이다. 대표적으로 사라하의 화살 만드는 여인, 띨로빠의 참깨 빻는 여인이 있다. 따라나타는 인도 불교에 대한 역사 지식을 통해 기존 티벳의 전통적 해석을 비판적으로 극복하려고 했다. 여성 성취자에 대한 그의 역사 기술 또한 기존의 불교사와 차이를 보여주었다. 그의 강한 인도 지향성은 비판의 대상이 되기도 하지만, 그의 문헌에서 인도 딴뜨릭 불교 여성들에 대한 전기가 풍부한 내용과 높은 위상의 긍정적인 역사로 담겨있을수 있었던 것은 그의 이런 특성이 아니었다면 불가능했을 것으로 생각 된다

영문 초록

In this paper, I examined the lineage history of Tantric Buddhism in India and the biographies of female siddhas through the literature of the 17th century Tibetan Buddhist monk, Jonang Tāranātha(1575～1635) Although Tāranātha s literature has received much attention in the world s Buddhist academia, it has rarely been introduced in Korea. Therefore, it is very meaningful to have a fresh understanding of the history of Indian Buddhism and Tantric Buddhism based on his literature. The most central consideration in this study is the biographical writings of Buddhist women in India, which are abundant in his literature. Tāranātha was also a scholar and a Tantric Buddhist attendant, who recorded the biographies of female ancestors and famous female siddhas associated with his Indian teachers in oral language. The Tantric Buddhist era in India was a time when women created new and creative Buddhism with the most vigorous activities in the history of Buddhism, so the value of this literature on which their history was recorded is very great. In this study, I investigated the genealogy of Indian Tantric Buddhism and the status and activity of women in it and its characteristics, through the 3 texts of the historical literature of Tāranātha, that is The Seven Instruction Lineages (bKa babs bdun ldan), Life of Kāṇha(Kah na pa’i rnam thar) and History of Buddhism in India(dGos ‘dod kun ’byung). Tāranātha described Dinakarā s biography in quite detail because she was close to his guru genealogically. In addition, the biography of Sahajayoginīcintā, the female master of Tantric union yoga, was important in his literature. Life of Kāṇha(Kah na pa’i rnam thar) is his comparatively later writing. This literature contains not only the biographies of many of Kāṇha s yogini disciples such as Mekhalā and Kanakhalā, Bandhe, Jalahari, but also the story of female guru like Bhadri. Through his knowledge of history of Indian Buddhism, Tāranātha tried critically to overcome the traditional interpretation of existing Tibetan buddhism. I compared and analyzed how his attitude of describing women s history differed from the existing Buddhist historical literatures such as Abhayadatta s and Buton s text. Tāranātha s an exaggerated belief in Indian Buddhism was criticized by Templeman, but, it was possible because of this characteristic of him that the biographies of Indian Buddhist women could be abundant in his literature, but also positively contained.
