만해 한용운의 신행관(信行觀) * -조선불교유신론을 중심으로-

국문 초록

만해 한용운은 서구 근대와 조우하면서 전통불교의 문제점을 새롭게 개혁하는 동시에 바로 그 전통불교를 근대담론으로 재개념화하여 한국 불교의 정체성을 정립하고자 하였다. 본고는 한국인의 종교심성을 순수 정통주의와 관용적 포용주의로 분석한 선행 관점을 원용하여, 조선불교유신론에 드러난 근대 한국불교 신행문화의 혼종성을 해석해 보았다. 만해가 청산하고자 한 각종 신앙의례는 현세적 경험주의에 입각한 관용적 포용주의가 표출된 대중적 신행문화(popular tradition)로 파악할 수 있다. 그리고 새롭게 쇄신하여 계승하고자 한 선불교 중심의 수행 의례는 순수 정통주의를 지향한 엘리트 신행문화(elite tradition)가 표출된 현상으로 읽을 수 있다. 만해는 신행문화의 개혁을 통해 전통불교의 불합리와 비불교적인 신앙의 잔재를 일소하는 한편, 다종교 상황에 직면한 불교의 정체성을 새롭게 정립하여 타종교의 도전에 응전하고자 하였다. 조선불교유신론에서 만해는 순수 정통주의의 입장에서 경험적 현세주의의 관용적 포용주의로 인해 무분별하게 양산된 신앙의례를 비판 하였다. 나아가 새로운 시대조류에 따라 참선 중심의 수행의례를 기반 으로 근대적 종교로서 불교의 정체성을 정립하기 위해, 전통불교에서그 원형을 복원하려 한 전통개신론적 신행관을 견지하였다.

영문 초록

Manhae Han Yong-un tried to establish the identity of Korean Buddhism by reconceptualizing traditional Buddhism as a modern discourse while also encountering Western modernity and reforming the problems of traditional Buddhism. This paper attempted to interpret the hybridity of modern Korean Buddhist cultures of faith and practice revealed in the Joseonbulgyoyushinron by analyzing the religious mentalities of Koreans with pure orthodoxy and tolerant inclusiveness. The various rituals of the faith that Manhae intended to liquidate can be understood as a popular culture of faith and practice in which tolerant inclusiveness based on the temporal empiricism was expressed. And the practice ritual performed by Zen Buddhism, which was renewed, can be read as a culture of faith and practice in which an elite tradition oriented toward pure orthodoxy was expressed. Manhae, through the reform of the culture of faith and practice, cleared the absurdity of the traditional Buddhism and the remnants of the non-Buddhist faith, and tried to establish the identity of the Buddhism in the multireligious context and to cope with the challenges of other religions. In the Joseonbulgyoyushinron, Manhae criticized the rituals of faith that were massively produced due to the tolerant inclusiveness of empirical temporalism in the perspective of pure orthodoxy. Furthermore, he can be said that he maintained traditionalprotestant view of faith and practice to restore the original form in the traditional Buddhism in order to establish the identity of Buddhism as a modern religion based on the practice ritual centered on the practice of Zen meditation along the flow of the new age.
