앤더슨의 『상상된 공동체』와 아르헨티나 민족주의에 대한 재검토

국문 초록

본 연구에서는 민족주의의 기원과 형성, 전파에 초점이 맞추어져 있는 베네딕트 앤더슨(Benedict Anderson)의 연구가 민족에 대한 올바른 개념과 정의를 결여하고 있다고 정의하고 민족의 관점에서만 바라보려는 기존의 해석들에 대해 문제를 제기하는 것으로부터 출발하고 있다. 이는 앤더슨이 민족과 민족주의의 문화적 기원에 대해서도 언급하고 있으며 민족주의의 내용 보다는 18세기 말 경 신대륙인 아메리카에서 인쇄 자본주의를 통해 부상한 민족이라는 개념이 유럽과 기타 지역으로 전파되어 나가는 역사적 전개 과정을 강조하고 있기 때문이다. 하지만 그의 저서 전체를 읽지 않은 일부 독자들은 그가 문필가들이 문화, 역사적으로 전혀 존재하지도 않았던 허구의 민족과 민족주의라는 개념을 상상하여 대중들에게 보급하였다고 주장한 것처럼 오해하고 있다. 이에 오해가 발생한 이유와 앤더슨이 강조하고자 하였으나 독자들에게 제대로 이해받지 못했던 부분에 대해 기술하였다. 다음으로, 앤더슨이 근대 민족과 민족주의 개념의 발상지로 지적하고 있는 라틴 아메리카 대륙의 역사와 문화 상황에 관해 아르헨티나 민족서사시로 지적되는 『마르띤 피에로(Martin Pierro)』의 형성과정과 연관지어 살펴보고자 한다. 마지막으로 앤더슨이 기술하고 있는 논지들이 민족과 민족주의 담론들과 대립되는 것만은 아니며 오히려 비판적 검토를 통해 세계화 시대에도 큰 위력을 발휘하고 있는 새로운 민족과 민족주의 담론의 형성에 기여할 수 있는 측면을 지니고 있음을 밝히고자 한다. 즉, 앤더슨의 논의들이 세계화 시대에도 여전히 큰 영향력을 발휘하고 있는 민족주의 담론을 새롭게 고찰할 수 있도록 도와줄 수 있다는 것이 본 연구의 주장이다.

영문 초록

This study first questioned the existing research on Benedict Anderson’s research on the creation, formation, and spread of nationalism, which criticizes Anderson’s research for lacking an accurate concept and definition of nation and is set on taking the nationalist viewpoint. Such criticism arises because Anderson refers to the cultural origins of the nation and nationalism and places more emphasis on how the notion of nation, which arose through print capitalism in the New World in the late eighteenth century, historically spread to Europe and other regions, rather than focusing on how nationalism could be defined. However, some of the readers who have not finished reading Anderson’s book mistakenly accept that he posited that writers have imagined fictitious concepts of nation and nationalism, which have not existed in the culture and history, and introduced them to the public. This study examined the reason why Anderson’s research was misinterpreted as well as the parts of his research which were emphasized but misinterpreted by his readers. Next, this study focused on Anderson’s account of the historical and cultural situation in the Latin Americas, which he points out as the birthplace of the modern concepts of nation and nationalism, with the forming process of Martin Pierro, the Argentinian folk epic. Finally, this study found that the arguments presented by Anderson are not against the discourses on nation and nationalism but that a critical review of the arguments could contribute to the formation of new discourses on nation and nationalism, which remain to have great influence in the globalized world. In other words, this study argued that Anderson’s points could provide a new viewpoint toward the nationalist discourse which still has a great influence in the era of globalization.
