동학에서 보이는 ‘전통’과 새로운 사유

국문 초록

동학사상에는 이미 유교적 요소가 매우 많이 포함되어 있었다. 또 동학의 포교 과정에서 제2세 교주 최시형은 유교적 요소를 더욱 강조하는 태도를 보였다. 동학농민전쟁의 최고지도자 전봉준 역시 동학을 유교적 측면에서 수용한 것으로 보인다. 농민군은 ‘현실’의 지배이념과 지배체제를 수용하거나 그것에 기초하여 인정의 회복을 열망하였다. 농민군은 기존 질서를 너머서려는 의지나 새로운 사상을 가지고 있지 않았다. 물론 이러한 농민군의 인식은 지배이념과 밀접한 관련을 가지는 것이었지만, 그렇다 하여 그들의 생각과 행동이 반드시 지배체제와 이념의 자장 안에 갇혀 있던 것은 아니었다. 그들은 기존의 지배이념과 지배체제에 의거하여 형성된 정치문화를 바탕으로 치자들에 지배이념에 상응하는 정사, 곧 민본이념에 의거하여 인정을 베풀 것을 ‘목숨을 걸고’ 요구한 것이다. 그 결과 민중에 의해 지배질서에는 균열이 가기 시작했고, 민본과 인정 이념을 기반으로 하던 ‘현실’의 정치질서와는 다른 새로운 정치질서가 아래로부터 형성되어 가고 있었던 것이다.

영문 초록

So many Confucian factors have already been contained in the Donghak thought. And the 2nd religious leader Choe Si Hyoung showed the attitude emphasizing the Confucian factor more in the missionary work process of Donghak. The top-ranking leader of Donghak Peasant War, Jeon Bong Joon also seemed to accept Donghak from the side of Confucian as well. The Peasant army accepted the ruling ideology and ruling system of ‘reality’, and desired the recovery of benevolent governance based on it. The Peasant army didn’t have the will passing over the existing order or the new thought. Of course, the consciousness of these Peasant armies has the close connection with the ruling ideology, and yet, their thought and behavior were not locked in the frame of ruling system and ideology without fail. They demand, at the risk of their life, to show the benevolent governance, based on the political culture formed by ruling ideology and ruling system. Consequently, the crack occured in the dominance order. And from the lower part of society, began to formthe new governmental system different with the governmental system of reality that had been based on the ‘minbon’ and benevolent governance
