국문 초록

종교개혁 500주년을 기념하면서 루터의 신학사상을 되짚어보는 일은 의의가 있을 것이다. 특히 루터의 종교개혁이 무엇이었는지, 그 신학과 영성의 핵심이 무엇이었는지를 파악하고 이해할 필요가 있다. 그래서 이 글은 루터의 신학과 영성의 개요를 주요한 주제들을―구원론과 칭의, 십자가의 신학, 신앙과 행위 그리고 성서 등― 중심으로 살펴본다. 루터의 사상을 전체적으로 볼 때 다음의 세 가지 점이 가장 두드러진 특징이라고 할 수 있다. 첫째, 루터의 종교개혁은 자유를 핵심으로 하고 있다. 루터는 하나님의 심판에 대한 두려움으로써 교회에 예속되어 살던 사람들을 복음으로써 자유롭게 했다. 그래서 신자들의 삶과 종교 행위의 이유가 불안이나 공포가 아니라 구원받은 자의 감사와 기쁨이 되게 했다. 하나님의 말씀인 성서도 교권으로부터 해방시켜서, 사람들 스스로 그리고 직접 읽고 알아나갈 길을 열어주었다. 그럼으로써 사람들을 하나님의 말씀 앞에 실존적인 존재로 세우고 자발적인 선택과 결단을 가능하게 했다. 둘째, 루터의 종교개혁은 진정한 신앙과 회심 그리고 변화의 길을 열어준다. 신자들이 받은 구원과 자유가 자신들의 행위나 능력이나 자질로써가 아니라 십자가에 죽으신 그리스도의 은총 덕분임을 강조한다. 그 은총을 전적으로 믿고 받아들이는 것이 신앙이다. 그것은 동시에 자기 자신이 구원에서 무력하고 왜곡되어 있기까지 한 존재임을 받아들이는 것이다. 다른 말로, 자기가 자신의 생명에서나 존재에서나 삶에서 주(主)였던 과거의 자기중심적이고 교만한 죄인을 떠나는 것을 의미한다. 그런 자기중심적인 자신을 떠날 때 비로소 전적타자인 하나님을 그리고 이웃과 창조세계에 가득한 수많은 타자들을 받아들일 수 있게 된다. 셋째, 루터의 종교개혁은 하나님의 사랑을 깨닫고 감사하며 자기 차례가 되어 사랑을 하게 되는 그리스도인의 삶의 흐름을 밝혀주었다. 신자들은 자신이 얻은 자유가 자신이 그것을 누릴만해서가 아니라 성자를 십자가에까지 내어주신 하나님의 사랑의 결과임을 믿는다. 즉 자신의 자유가 근본적으로는 하나님의 사랑의 결과임을, 그래서 그것이 얼마나 감사하며 소중한지를 깨닫는다. 그리고 이제는 자신도 하나님을 기쁨으로 사랑하게 되고, 하나님이 창조한 세계를 사랑하게 된다. 하나님이 주신 자유로써 세상을 사랑하고, 세상을 사랑함으로써 자유롭게 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

In commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation, it is significant to reexamine the ideology of Martin Luther. It seems especially necessary to understand what his Reformation is and the very core of his theology and spirituality. Therefore, this article examines the important subjects of his ideology and spirituality: soteriology, justification by faith, theology of cross, faith and work, scripture. Taken as a whole, his ideology consists of three remarkable points. First, freedom plays a key role in Luther’s Reformation and ideology. With evangel, Luther liberated the men from the Church that made them afraid by constantly preaching God’s wrath over the sinners. So the cause of believers’ life and religious acts became gratitude and joy, not anxiety or fear. The scripture, Word of God, was also liberated from the Magisterium of Church allowing men to read it by themselves and understand God’s Will directly. Therefore, the believers could become an existential being in the face of God’s Word, and volunteers of choice and decision towards God and his world. Second, the genuine faith, convincement, and the way of christian life were opened by the virtue of the Reformation and the ideology of Luther. He emphasized that the salvation and freedom of believers are realized not by their works but only by the grace of Christ dead over the cross. Faith is to believe and accept grace. At the same time, it also consists of accepting the fact that the believer himself is powerless of his own salvation and that he is distorted as a sinner. In other words, it means that he leaves his past himself, an egocentric and arrogant sinner who was the lord of his own being or life. Leaving such himself, and only then, can he accept God the Other, the neighbors and the others in the created world. Third, in Luther’s ideology, the stream of christian life where the believer, awaken to God’s love, comes to love God and the others with gratitude at his time is exposed.
