라인홀드 니버의 기독교 현실주의의 요체와 평가

국문 초록

기독교 현실주의는 비관주의도 낙관주의도 아니라는 점에서 역설적 이면서 변증법적이다. 아마 그래서 패터슨 (Patterson) 이 니버에게 “현실 적인 낙관주의자” (realistic optimist) 라는 새로운 호칭을 붙이고 있는지도 모른다. 니버를 현실주의적이라고 보는 이유는 니버가 인간의 본성을 죄를 짓기 쉬운 존재로서 현실적으로 파악했기 때문이다. 그리고 그가 낙관주의적이었다면 하나님이 인간에게 자유와 그것을 활용하는 능력으로서 창의성을 주셨다고 믿었기 때문이다. 기독교 현실주의는 교리는 아니다. 인간 본성이 지닌 죄와 창의성을 동시에 중요시하면서 정치와 윤리 (도덕) 문제를 현실적으로 파악하려는 기독교적, 신학적 관점이라고 할 수 있다. 니버의 기독교 현실주의 사상은 일찍이 『도덕적 인간과 비도덕적 사회』에서 싹트기 시작하면서 기독 교적 시각에서 사회 전반의 문제들을 다루려는 운동으로 발전했다고 할수 있다. 그것이 더 깊은 내용을 지닌 것으로 진전하게 된 배경에는 유럽 에서 벌어진 1차 대전과 2차 대전이 미친 영향도 한몫했다. 두 번의 전쟁을 겪은 유럽과 미국에서, 신학자들의 국제 정치 문제와 전쟁에 대한 기독교 현실주의 주장이 더 설득력을 더해 갔다. 니버의 기독교 현실주의와 정치를 다룬 두 권의 책이, 히틀러가 폴란드를 침략한 얼마 후, 1940 년대 초에 출판된 것은 단지 우연은 아니다. 니버는 미국의 국내 정치와 윤리 문제에 대해서도 많은 글을 썼지만, 특히 독일, 이탈리아, 소련에 등장한 전체주의 세력의 팽창을 심각하게 우려하였다. 미국만이 그 세력에 대항할 수 있는 국가라는 것을 강조하였으며, 후에 미국의 유럽 전쟁 참전을 위해 교회가 적극적인 역할을 하도록 노력했다. 이 글에서는, 기독교 현실주의 사상에서 논의되는 몇 가지 논점들, 도덕 이원론, 기독교 시각에서의 자유주의와 마르크스주의 비판, 구조에 대한 강조, 정의와 사랑, 전쟁과 평화, 죄와 타락 등의 문제를 다루었다. 또 기독교 현실주의에 대한 중요한 비판으로 국제 정치학자들과 해방신 학의 비판을 간략히 다루었다.

영문 초록

As early as in the 1920s, some Protestant theologians in the U.S. were already searching for ideas for coping with important social issues emerging in rapidly changing industrial America. For instance, McIntosh at Yale Divinity School co-authored a book, entitled Religious Realism. But it was in the work of Reinhold Niebuhr (1892-1971) that the idea about Christian realism came to its fruition when he first published Moral Man and Immoral Society and subsequently a number of books in which he expounded many profound thoughts on various themes of Christian realism. Undoubtedly Niebuhr is, and deservedly so, recognized as the major and leading theologian who had developed and succeeded in providing both theoretical and practical substance to the idea of Christian Realism. In short, Christian Realism refers to a Christian response to the realities of politics and ethics (morality) . Basing its arguments on biblical faith and insights on the sin and fall, it asserts that the Christian perspective on human nature and political phenomena must be realistic, rather than pessimistic or optimistic. In this paper, I have briefly elaborated seven points which may be considered to be recurrent themes closely identified with Christian realism, and some critical views of Christian realism raised by some political scientists and liberation theologians. They are: emphasis on structure; criticism of both liberalism and Marxism from the Biblical standpoint; peace and war; democracy; dual ethics in political phenomena; Justice and love; and sin. Toward the end of the paper, a question as to whether Christian realism is still relevant in the 21st Century is raised. I am inclined to give apositive response, particularly because Christian realists are increasingly called upon to play a positive role in the world threatened by increasingly horrendous wars in various parts around the world.
