국문 초록

요즘 기독교세가 약화되고 있다는 염려 속에서 여러 가지 처방들이 수없이 제시되고 있다. 그런데 아쉬운 점은 이러한 것들 중에 본질적인 이슈인 기독교의 정체성에 대한 논의가 많지 않다는 것이다. 신앙의 대상과의 대화, 소통, 관계를 말하는 기도는 그리스도인과 그리스도교 공동체의 근원적인 주제다. 기도와 행동에 대해 대표적 발언을 한 인물이 20세기의 최고의 영성 가로 인정받고 있는 토마스 머튼이다. 그는 수도원에서, 원자력이 힘을 얻는 과학 기술 시대의 정황 속에서, 기도 생활, 명상, 관상, 관상 생활 등이 세상 사람들에게 무슨 의미가 있는지를 “행동 세계 속에서의 관상” 이란 소논문 속에서 논의하였다. 이러한 머튼의 관상 사상은 그가 수도원 생활을 하면서 발전해갔다. 머튼은 수도원 생활과 저술을 통해 세상과 접촉하면서 관상가는 세상과 단절될 수 없는 관계라는 것을 점점 절감 했다. 머튼에게 있어 세상의 문제에 대한 해결책이 관상이다. 왜냐하면, 세상은 자신의 욕망이 반영된 환상 (illusion) 을 실재라고 인식하고 살아가고 있기 때문이다. 이런 왜곡된 실재에 대해 기도, 명상, 관상을 통한 관상 생활은 내재적 하나님에 대한 이해와 자기 자신의 내면에 대한 통찰을 통해 인격 성숙을 가져오게 한다. 이런 자신과 하나님과의 합일을 추구 하면서 세계관의 새로운 전망을 직면하면서 변화로 나아가게 된다. 이를 통해 나, 이웃, 만물, 하나님과의 관계가 상호 연결된다. 그래서 머튼은 수도원이나 혼자서 기도 생활을 깊이 하는 사람들은 혼자만의 세계에서도 이타성을 유지하고 행해야 할 도덕적 의무를 지니고 있음을 밝히고 있다. 그는 현대 인간의 하나님과의 합일에 대한 이런 영성적 욕구가 영혼 속에 깊이 뿌리 내려있음을 밝힌다.

영문 초록

Nowadays, all kinds of remedies have been suggested for the discontents and dysfunctions of the churches in Korea. However, there has not been sufficient discussion on the essential issue of Christianity. Prayer, which means the dialogue, communication, and relationship with, Our Lord, is the primary issue for Christians and the Christian community. Thomas Merton is one of the highest regarded spiritual people of the 20th century whose thought holds together the crucial relationship between prayer and action. In his book Contemplation in a World of Action, Merton examines the meaning of prayer life, solitude, and meditation in the atomic age for people outside the monastery. These theories of Merton continued to develop during his life in the monastery. By living in the monastery and getting in touch with the outside readers of his books, he gradually began to recognize that the contemplative cannot sever ones ties with the world. In Merton’s thought, the solution to the problems of the world is contemplation because society perceives reality according to an illusion that their desires create. As one continually disciplines oneself through prayer, meditation, and contemplation personal growth and illumination may result. Furthermore, one may gain an understanding of the immanent God and insight into one’s own inner world. While one seeks union with God, transformation of oneself may occur by coping with the new view of the world afforded through contemplation. Through this seeking, one may mutually connect to oneself, one’sneighbor, creation, and God. Therefore, Merton asserts that even the people in the monastery or people who practice deep solitary prayer life require an altruistic heart even in an individual world. He makes a clear statement that there is a deep root of spiritual need seeking to be united with God in the soul of modern man.
