국문 초록

19세기 순수미술은 기존에 시도된 바 없던 조형적 실험들을 통해 다양한 변혁을 이뤄냈다. 예술계의 진보적 변화와 산업혁명에 의한 급속한 경제 성장은 장신구계에도 영향을 끼쳐 기존과는 확연히 구분되는 개방적이고 혁신적인 시도들이 뒤따랐다. 그 결과로 ‘현대장신구(contemporary jewelry)’라는 새로운 개념도 자연스럽게 생겨났다. 미국은 이와 같은 현상이 가장 활발하였던 곳으로, 제2차 세계 대전의 직접적 상흔을 피해갈 수 있었고 전쟁 중 군수품 생산과 전후의 경기 부양 효과로 경제적 풍요도 누리고 있었다. 또한 제2차 세계 대전을 피해 유럽에서 건너 온 미술가와 디자이너들의 작품 및 교육 활동에 의해 전국적으로 확산된 모던 아트와 디자인이 현대장신구가 태동할 수 있는 잠재적 배경을 제공하고 있었다. 때를 같이하여 뉴욕 현대미술관이 『Modern Handmade Jewelry』라는 최초의 현대장신구 전시회를 1946년에 개최하였다. 전시회에는 기성 장신구 작가들 외에 미술가들이 대거 참가하였다. 그들은 급변하던 현대미술의 시각 언어로 장신구를 실험했는데, 관습적 관념과 능숙하지 못한 기술에 구애받지 않고 참신하고 다양한 방식으로 장신구 제작을 시도하였다. 이는 곧 대내외적 자극으로 충만했던 장신구계의 모더니즘적 감성을 촉발시키는 계기로 작용했고 현대장신구의 시작으로 이어졌다. 그러므로 현대장신구가 독립적 예술품으로서 현재와 같은 위상을 갖는 데 있어 20세기 초중반 미술가들의 장신구 창작이 기여한 바 크다.

영문 초록

In the 19th century, fine arts made various changes through formative experiments which had not been attempted before. The progressive changes in the art world and the rapid economic growth caused by the Industrial Revolution influenced the jewelry world following innovative attempts which are surely distinguished from the existing. As a result, a new concept of contemporary jewelry naturally emerged. The United States had the most active development of this new concept; moreover, the United States was able to avoid the direct scars of the Second World War and was enjoying economic wealth through military production and postwar economic stimulus during the war. Moreover, the country was supported by the social environment in which the modern art and design spread throughout in the works and education of artists and designers who came from Europe to avoid the war. At the same time, the Museum of Modern Art, New York held its first contemporary jewelry exhibition 『Modern Handmade Jewelry』 in 1946. There were a lot of artists in the exhibition, in addition to the established jewelry artists. They experimented with jewelry as visual language of contemporary art, not bounded by customary ideas and inept techniques, but produced them in novel and diverse ways. This triggered the modernistic sensibility of the jewelry world which was filled with internal and external stimuli, leading to the start of contemporary jewelry. Therefore, the jewelry works of artists in the early and mid-20th century contributed greatly to the modern status of contemporary jewelry as independent art works.
