개념 공예의 전개에 관한 연구

국문 초록

본 논문은 동시대 공예의 양상 중 개념 공예의 전개에 대해 살펴보고, 이를 개념미술의 관점을 통해 분석해 본다. 스튜디오 공예 운동과 미술의 변화로 1960년대 이후 공예는 지속해서 발전하면서 독자적인 예술의 장르로 확장되었다. 다양한 공예 활동 중 대표적인 것은 작품성과 창의성을 중요한 평가 요소로 하는 ‘예술로서 공예’이다. 현대미술의 조형적 가치나 표현방식을 흡수함으로써 예술에 도달하고자 하는 것으로 최근 전개되고 있는 개념 공예는 이러한 특징들을 잘 나타내 준다. 이러한 점에서 연구자는 1960년대 나타난 개념미술의 관점을 통해 개념 공예를 설명하고자 한다. 개념미술은 작품에 포함된 개념 또는 아이디어가 물질적, 미학적, 기술적인 것보다 선행하는 미술을 말한다. 미술을 구성하는 사고와 그에 대한 지각을 강조하는 것이다. 개념 공예도 재료나 제작공정이 가지고 있는 구체성에서 벗어나 물질적 실현보다는 세계를 바라보는 자신들의 생각을 설명하면서 개념과 아이디어로 접근한다. 본 연구의 관심은 동시대 공예가 문화적, 사회적 가치를 추구할 수 있는 예술실천의 장임을 주목하면서 외형적으로만 예술화된 공예를 지양하고 공예의 취약한 비평 담론에 이론적 기반을 마련하여 예술의 ‘종언 이후(post) 공예’의 새로운 패러다임을 제시하고자 하는 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper is to look into the development of the conceptual craft out of contemporary craft and to explore it from the perspective of conceptual art. Along with the Studio craft movement and since 1960 s, the craft has kept growing to an independent territory of art. The most remarkable thing with regards to the diversified crafts activities is the fact that ‘craft-as-art’ focuses on art character and creativity for evaluating their performances. The conceptual craft shows that during the recent development it reaches the art by taking into account values as plastic arts or way of expression of the contemporary art. Based on this consideration, I tried to look at the conceptual craft from the perspective of the various forms of conceptual art in 1960 s. The conceptual art expresses the art that precedes physical, aesthetical and technical works, emphasizing its perception and thought. With regards to the conceptual craft, I tried to think out of limited sense of concreteness connected with its material or manufacturing process, and share concept and idea towards the outside world beyond its physical performances. This paper delivers that the contemporary art provides some place for art practice to pursue cultural and social values, and at the same time avoids the craft as art purely based on external or physical viewpoint. In an effort to address the criticism, this paper tries to share a new paradigm of ‘post craft’ as the art by offering a theoretical groundwork to the contemporary art.
