국문 초록

본고는 조형예술에서 살펴본 매듭의 역할을 세 가지 범주로 나누어 분석한 것이다. 매듭의 통시적·공시적 고찰을 통해 조형예술의 형태적, 공간적, 관념적 측면을 동시에 살펴봄으로써 전통 매듭 혹은 장식적 용도로 국한된 연구의 영역을 확장하는 것에 연구의 목적이 있다. 매듭은 우리의 일상에서 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있는 존재이다. 별다른 주의 없이 매듭을 사용하고 있지만 매듭의 형태, 묶는 행위, 그리고 매듭을 풀어내는 과정 속에 내재한 의미와 상징에서 인류의 무구한 역사를 확인할 수 있다. 인류 문명의 발전에 큰 원동력으로 작용한 매듭은 역사적으로 가장 오래된 결합의 기술로서 오늘날까지 다양한 영역에서 사용되고 있다. 역사 속에서 매듭은 시대와 장소에 따라 운반, 선박, 건설, 편물, 의장, 문자, 주술 등과 같은 다양한 층위의 용도와 의미들을 나타낸다. 또한, 섬유를 매듭짓는 것만으로 삼차원의 형태가 나타나며, 결합하는 과정에서는 점, 선, 면들의 조형 요소들이 생성되기도 한다. 특히, 1960년대에 매듭의 주요 대상인 섬유가 급진적인 예술 형태를 대표하는 재료가 되면서 매듭은 예술가들의 최우선 표현 수단으로 자리하게 되었다. 시대의 담론을 제시하게 된 매듭은 예술가의 상징적 의미를 전달하거나, 형태 구축을 위한 역할을 수행하며 오늘날까지 그 영역을 확장하고 있는 모습이다. 그 외, 이 논문을 연구하는 과정에서 추가적으로 발견한 반복의 행위를 위한 매듭의 역할은 후속 연구에서 고찰해 보겠다. 선별한 조형작품에서 분석한 매듭의 역할이 새로운 시각예술의 출현을 위한 선행 연구로서 자리하길 바라며, 마지막으로 근원적인 기술의 고유한 가치를 살펴보는 것에 이 연구의 의의를 두고자 한다.

영문 초록

The present work is an analysis of the role of knot examined in formative art with classification of its three categories. The purpose of this paper is to expand the scope of study limited to traditional knot or decorative use by examining the morphological, spatial, and ideological aspects of formative art through the diachronic and synchronic consideration of knot. Knot exists in the proximity of our everyday life. Knot is used without any special attention, but the immaculate history of humanity can be detected in the meaning and symbol that are inherent in the form of knot, the tying act, and the process of undoing it. Knot which has wrought a huge driving force in the advancement of human civilization is the oldest technology of combination in history and is still being used nowadays in an array of fields. Knot in history conveys various uses and meanings of layers including transportation, vessel, construction, knitting, design, letter, spell, etc. according to its time and place. Also, the formative elements of dots, lines, and sides are generated in the process of combining the tied knot, assuming a three-dimensional shape in and of itself. Such knot is mainly executed in fabric. Fabric creates fissure to the concept of traditional sculpt in the 1960s and builds a new definition for material never before seen. Fabric, which had proposed the discourse of the age and fore-fronted the development of new artistic style, added the symbolism and formativeness inherent in knot and settled in as a representative medium of expression for artists. Moreover, whether it is to display a symbolism or establish a form appropriate for the purpose of an artist, knot is still broadening its sphere of role up to this day. The role of knots in repetitive behaviors additionally found in this paper will be analyzed in further study. Expecting the role of knot analyzed in the selected artists’ work to apply as precedent research for the emergence of new visual arts, it is worthwhile to mention, lastly, that the significance of this study lies in examining the intrinsic value of fundamental technology.
