국문 초록

본 논문은 니콜라 부리오의 ‘관계 미학(Relational Aesthetics)’ 이후를 다룬다. 부리오는 90년대 ‘관객 참여적’이고 ‘사회적 유대’가 강조되는 일련의 새로운 예술적 시도들을 관계 미학이라 명명하고 그 성격을 규명하고자 하였다. 클레어 비숍, 자크 랑시에르 등에 의해 과도한 낙관주의라는 비판에 부딪히기도 하였으나 관계 미학은 오늘날 90년대 미술을 설명하는 가장 강력한 이론 중 하나로 자리매김하였다. 그러나 최근 부리오의 행보는 기존의 관계 미학을 수정 혹은 확대하려는 움직임을 보여주고 있는데 본 논문은 이러한 변화를 포착하고 이를 ‘사변적 실재론(Speculative Realism)’과의 관련성 측면에서 분석하였다. 사변적 실재론은 2010년 이후 급부상한 일련의 철학운동으로 부리오가 자신의 관계 미학을 수정하는 데 결정적인 원인이 되었다. ‘인간중심주의’에 대한 반대를 가장 큰 특징으로 하는 사변적 실재론의 영향으로 부리오는 인간상호간(inter-human) 관계를 전제로 한 관계 미학을 ‘비인간(non-human)’을 포함하는 관계로 확장하고자 시도한다. 이는 인류세의 환경 하에서 점차 가속화되는 환경문제에 대한 부리오의 문제의식이 작용한 결과이기도 하나, 인간이 중요하기에 비인간이 중요해지는 역설을 포함한다.

영문 초록

This study deals with changes that were made after Nicolas Bourriaud’s ‘Relational Aesthetics’. In the 90’s, Bourriaud created the term ‘relational aesthetics’ to describe a set of artistic practices that involves ‘audience participation’ and emphasizes ‘social ties’. He also sought to examine its characteristics. Although ‘Relational Aesthetics’ faced much criticism of being excessively optimistic by Clair Bishop and Jacques Ranciere, it has now firmly established itself as one of the most significant theories that are used to explain art during the 90’s. However, Bourriaud’s recent move seems to modify or expand the existing ‘Relational Aesthetics’. The study observed such changes and analyzed them in terms of its relationship with ‘Speculative Realism’. ‘Speculative Realism’ is a series of philosophical movement which emerged since 2010, and it was a critical factor in Bourriaud’s modification of his ‘Relational Aesthetics’. Influenced by ‘Speculative Realism’, which mainly seeks to refute what it views as ‘anthropocentric’, Bourriaud attempts at further expanding relational aesthetics that is premised on inter-human relationship to a ‘relationship’ which even includes the ‘non-human’. This could be resulting from Bourriaud’s awareness of environmental problems that are ever accelerating in the Anthropocene, but at the same time, it contains a paradox in which the non-human becomes important precisely because humans are important.
