국문 초록

현재 살로몬으로 대표되며, 카로슈티클럽으로 불리는 일군의 학자들에 의해 간다리 지역에서 발굴된 불교사본들에 대한 연구가 한창 진행 중이다. 오늘날 파키스탄의 북쪽에 위치한 페샤와르 분지 일대를 가리키는 간다라는 과거 실크로드에 위치한 주요 도시들 가운에 하나였으며, 상이한 문명이 교차하는 접경지대였다는 점에서 지정학적으로 중요한 지역이었다. 이 지역의 토착어, 즉 간다리로 기록된 방대한 양의 불교 사본들은, 당시 사용된 언어와 사상, 역사를 이해할 수 있는 중요한 단서가 되고 있다. 여기에서 다루고자 하는 담마빠다 간다리본은 1892년에 프랑스의 탐험가에 의해 발견된 후, 브러에 의해 처음으로 편집되었다. 제작연대가 1-2세기까지로 소급되는 이 필사본은, 카샤파 혹은 담마굽타카에 속했을 것으로 추정되며, 초기불교의 모습을 가장 잘 담고 있는 문헌들 가운데 하나라는 점에서 그 연구가치가 높다고 할 수 있다. 따라서 많은 학자들에 의해서 간다리어와 간다리 담마빠다에 대한 연구가 진행되어왔다. 하지만, 현재까지 특정한 간다리어 용례가 정리 되지 않았기 때문에, 이에 본고에서는 다 음과 같은 점에 주목해 보았다. (1) 산스크리트어의 속격 어미가 그대로 사용되는 경우. (2) 동사의 다양한 원망형과 절대격 사용. (3) 특이한 음성학적인 변화. (4) 일관성 없이 사용되는 자음. 이는 담마빠다의 첫 장인 브라마나장을 중심으로 확인한 사항으로, 지금까지 알려진 간다리 문법의 예외적인 특징들에 주목했다는 점에서 의의를 갖는다.

영문 초록

Led by Richard Salomon, the so-called Kharoṣṭhī club has continued research on the Buddhist manuscripts, which were excavated in the region of Gāndhāra. The modern Peshawar of the northwest frontier province of Pakistan played an important role of the ancient region of Gāndhāra. Since it was one of the main cities of the Silk Road, Gāndhāra was geopolitically important. Abundant manuscripts from the region, written in its native language, namely Gāndhārī, are explicitly great clues to understand the Gāndhārī language, thought, and history. In this research, I have dealt with the Gāndhārī Dharmapada which was discovered by a French expedition in 1892, and have been studied by many scholars. Estimated to be compiled in the first or the second century CE, the manuscript might have belonged to the Kāśyapīyas or the Dharmaguptakas. In addition, since it is one of the scriptures which contain the teaching of early Buddhism, the Gāndhārī Dharmapada deserves in-depth research. Therefore, this study focuses on the characteristics of irregular usages of Gāndhārī in the Brāhmaṇa chapter. In other words, this research aims at looking for the peculiar examples which are different from the acknowledged knowledge about Gāndhārī in advanced research.
