삼각산 僧伽寺 석조승가대사상 小考

국문 초록

서울 삼각산 승가사에 봉안되어 있는 석조승가대사상은 唐代初에 서역에서 중국으로 건너와 泗州(지금의 安徽省 臨淮)에 보조왕사라는 사찰을 세우고 활약하였던 승가대사를 조각한 상으로서 국내에서는 흔치않은 예이다. 이 상은 광배가 올바른 위치에 놓여있지 않아서 상에 비해서 광배가 크게 보였을 뿐 아니라 李䫨(1042-1110)가 찬술한 「삼각산중수승가굴기」(1106년)에 언급된 수태화상이 조성했다는 승가대사상의 제작시기가 통일 신라시대로까지 올라가므로 광배의 뒷면에 새겨진 명문에 보이는 고려 현종 15년(1024)이 승가대사상의 제작시기가 아닐 가능성이 제기되기도 하였다. 승가대사상은 오랫동안 상 표면에 백색 안료가 두껍게 칠해져 있어 원래 의 모습을 살펴볼 수 없는 상태였으나 최근 이 상이 보수되면서 표면을 덮고 있던 백색 안료가 벗겨져 승가대사상의 자비롭고 인간적인 얼굴이 드러나게 되었는데, 비록 코와 뺨을 비롯해서 곳곳이 심하게 훼손된 상태였으나 고려조각의 사실성과 뛰어난 조형성을 확인할 수 있었다. 또한 광배의 높이를 제 위치에 맞게 조절하여 배치함으로써 상과 조화를 이루는 광배가 원래부터 함께 제작되었다는 것을 확인할 수 있어, 승가대사상의 조성 시기는 광배 명문에 보이는 고려 현종대로 보는 것에 무리가 없는 것으로 생각된다. 승가사 승가대사상은 머리에 풍모를 쓰고 있다는 점 외에는 당말오대와 북송대에 조성된 승가대사상의 도상과는 다른 표현을 보인다. 우선 소매가 긴 승복을 입고 양손을 옷으로 덮거나 선정인을 결하고 있는 중국의 승가대 사상들과 달리 불상의 복식인 大衣를 착의하고 오른손의 검지를 위쪽을 향해 곧게 편 수인을 결하고 있다. 밀교도상의 영향을 받은 것으로 생각되는 이 수인을 비롯해서 세부의 조각기법, 광배의 문양 등 여러 면에서 五代 吳越지역 불교미술로부터의 영향이 발견되는데, 고려와 오월 사이의 활발했던 불교문화교류 과정에서 전래된 불교미술의 여러 요소가 승가대사상의 조성에 반영된 것으로 이해된다.

영문 초록

This paper investigates stone image of Great Monk Sengqie enshrined in a small grotto at Seunggasa(Seungga Temple) on Mt. Samgak in Seoul. This image is a rare representation of Great Monk Sengqie(ca. 660-710) who came over to China during Tang dynasty in the 7th century from Central Asia, and founded Puzhaowangsi(普照王寺), a famous Buddhist temple in Sizhou(泗州), present-day Liuhuai(臨淮), Anhui Province on the south shore of the Huai River. Great Monk Sengqie attained veneration and was considered as the incarnation of Bodhisattva Guanyin after his death. The textual record tells that cult of Monk Sengqie was introduced into Korea in the late Silla period and was handed down to Goryeo, where Great Monk Sengqie was worshipped among royal families and aristocrats. The stone image of Great Monk Sengqie at Seunggasa contains an exquisitely carved decorative stone halo that bears incised inscription dating the year of 1024 CE on its back. However, it has been controversial whether this image was made in 1024, the same year as the stone halo was created. Heavily covered with white painting pigment, the Great Monk Sengqie image was small and not properly aligned with the halo, so the image was difficult to be considered as a counterpart of the halo. In 2017, when Great Monk Sengqie image was repaired, white paint covering its real face was removed and warm and merciful one was finally revealed, although heavily damaged in its nose and cheek. Besides, the relocation of its halo to the right place exhibits that the image and halo belong together and were most likely made in the same year of 1024 CE. The Great Monk Sengqie image at Seunggasa demonstrates both common features and differences to other Great Monk Sengqie images. Its top of the head draped with a cowl follows the iconography of typical Great Monk Sengqie images from the late Tang to Five Dynasties and from the Northern Song, whereas the Great Sengqie image at Seunggasa wears Kasaya, the garment of Buddha, instead of long-sleeved monk robes appeared in all the Great Monk Sengqie images from China. Stretching his right index finger upward, the hand gesture of Great Monk Sengqie image at Seunggasa is one of unique aspects presumably influenced by Esoteric Buddhism, appeared particularly in the iconography of garbhakosa-dhatu(胎藏圖像) of Mahāvairocana Tantra (大日經) translated by Eminent Monk Śubhakarasiṃha(善無畏, 637-735 CE). It seems worth noting that the identical hand-gesture appears in the Buddha images made in Wuyue (吳越, 907-978) Kingdom, which had frequent cultural exchange with Goryeo specially in the field of Buddhism.
