새로운 정체성‘Korean-American’에 관한 비교연구

국문 초록

정체성이란 자신이 속하는 문화와 환경에 대한 자신의 반응이다. 대체로 한 민족이나 국가는 많은 공통된 문화를 형성하고 공유하기 때문에 문화정체성은 민족정체성이나 국가 정체성과도 연결된다고 본다. 이는 공유된 특징으로 인해 어느 한 개인이 특정 민족이나 국가에 자신이 스스로 속해있다고 느끼는 감정과도 일맥상통한다고 볼 수 있다. 우리민족의 해외 이민의 역사가 100년을 넘기면서 해외 교포가 700만명에 이르고 재미교포만도 200만 명을 넘는 시대에 우리는 살고 있다. 특히 재미교포 사회는 그 동안 양적, 질적으로 엄청난 성장을 거듭해왔다. 새롭게 이주해 온 땅에 정착하기 위해, 먹고 사는 문제를 해결하기 위해 우리의 1세대 이민들은 오로지 앞만 보고 달려왔다. 그러다 보니 우리의 자녀들 이 성장통처럼 겪어야 하는 정체성의 문제에 대해 방기하거나 무관심했던 것이 사실이다. 민족 정체성은 미국과 같이 다민족 사회에 살고 있는 재미교포들에게는 항상 존재하는 상수라기보다는 상황에 따라 달라질 수 있는 주요한 변수라고 보아야 하며 그것은 나면서부터 갖게 된 한국인의 정체성과 성장하면서 얻게 되는 미국인으로서의 정체성 사이에서 나름의 고통스러운 시간을 겪어내어 획득하게 되는 절충물 내지는 결과물이라 말 할 수 있을 것이다. 그 러기에 교포자녀들의 정체성의 혼란은 한민족으로서 가져야 할 민족정체성과 미국인으로서 경험하게 되는 국가정체성을 조화롭게 유지하지 못하고 모순적으로 양자가 충돌함으로서 생겨나게 되는 결과로 볼 수 있다. 이것은 이민 1세대가 스스로 민족적 정체성에 대해 특별히 자녀들에게 가르치지 않았을 뿐 아니라 언어나 문화의 차이에 따른 이민생활의 고단함이나 어려움 등에 따라 오히려 자녀들이라도 적극적으로 빠른 시간 안에 미국인으로서 미국화가 되기를 바란 부모세대의 방조도 한 원인이었다고 볼 수 있을 것이다. 코리안 아메리칸이라는 새로운 정체성은 한국의 옛것만을 고집하는 전통적인 한국인도 아니고 미국 사회에 철저히 동화된 미국인도 아닌 새로운 절충형의 모습이 될 것이며 미국 시민으로서의 권리와 책임을 다하며 동시에 모국에 대한 애정과 관심을 갖고 있는 새로운 정체성의 모델이 될 수 있다. 이들은 이중언어를 유창하게 구사하고 이중 문화권에서 살아감으로써 한국과 미국 양국 모두에서 아무런 제약이나 문제없이 활동할 수 있는 능력을 갖추었을 뿐 아니라 또한 스스로를 새로운 코리안 아메리칸으로 인식하며 확고한 자아의식을 가지고 문화적 정체성의 혼란을 당당히 극복한 자랑스런 우리의‘미래’로 거듭날 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

One’s identity is created by the surrounding environment and its accompanying culture. Also, since a race and its home country share many cultural aspects, a people’s identity has a very close relationship with their race’s identity. Thus, sharing these cultural similarities helps to bring the people closer to their race and home nation. Korea has over 100 years of immigration history. Among the 7 million Korean immigrants around the world, there are over 2 million Korean immigrants in USA. The first Korean American generation worked so hard in a new land of opportunity in order to survive and to make a living with no time to develop a strong cultural identity. Therefore an identity problem for the 2nd generation of Korean-Americans is considered a growing pain which has unfortunately been ignored and neglected. Finding one’s identity while growing up in the multicultural community of the USA is not the same as finding one’s identity in Korea. Thus, these second-generation children must learn how to correctly balance their two developing cultural identities. This can be done by teaching them how to be a good American in meeting the responsibilities and enjoying the rights and liberties that come from being an American while instilling a sense of respect and love for their mother country. They do not have to be completely educated in the traditional Korean culture, but neither is there a need to completely conform to the trends and fashions of American life. An example of a good second-generation Korean American would be one that is bilingual, understands the cultures of America and Korean, and is able to live within each country as an accepted member of that community. So, these second-generation Korean Americans are neither Korean or American, they are a new cultural group called the Korean American. They will have a bright future ahead of them because they have been able to overcome the struggle of cultural friction. They should be proud of what they have accomplished and what they can accomplish because of who they are.
