An analysis of perceived deterrent effects among traffic offenders using a vignette on drunk driving

국문 초록

본 연구는 최근의 인지억제이론에 기반 하여, 이전 음주운전 경험 및 음주운전 처벌경험이 음주운전 단속가능성, 음주운전에 호의적 태도, 향후 음주운전 의도에 미치는 영향을 분석 하였다. 본 연구를 위해 음주운전 가정 시나리오를 포함한 질문지가 372명의 교통사범에게 실시되었다. 본 연구의 결과는 미국에서 비범죄자 샘플을 상대로 수행된 일련의 인지억제 연구결과와 어느정도 일치한다. 억제이론에서 주장하는 바와 같이 이전 음주운전 경험 및 음주운전 처벌경험 등은 음주운전 단속가능성과 유의미하게 관련된 것으로 분석되었다. 다만, 향후 음주운전 의도를 성공적으로 예측한 변수는 음주운전 처벌경험 및 단속가능성 등억제이론 관련 변수가 아닌 음주운전에 호의적 태도 등 사회학습이론 관련 변수인 것으로 나타났다. 마지막으로 본 연구의 이론적, 정책적 함의가 논의되었다.

영문 초록

Premised on recent literature on perceptual deterrence, the current study aims to examine the impacts of prior offending and punishment experiences on three related outcomes such as certainty of getting caught, favorable attitudes toward drunk driving and finally future intention to drunk driving. In order to assess the relationships, 372 traffic-related offenders were surveyed using a vignette and the results turned out to be largely consistent with those of prior studies published in U.S. based on non-offender samples. The current study found that, even though prior offending and punishment experiences influenced certainty of getting caught in a way consistent to deterrence theory, it was largely the effects of favorable attitudes and prior offending from social learning theory that consistently predicted intention to drunk driving. Finally theory and policy implications were discussed.
