영문 초록

This paper aims at examining a minoritized language and interculturalism in D. H. Hwang’s Chinglish. Chinglish gives humorous examples mistranslated into English in China. These mistranslated phrases indicate that a minor practice of major language has the subversive power against the power of English as a major language and causes miscommunications between the two countries. According to intercultural discourses in the age of globalization, Hwang decides to make a great change in the background of his play in an international perspective, which is from the United States to China. The playwright develops racial identity politics and interculturalism not in the United States but in China without geographical limitations. In Chinglish, main character Caucasian Daniel can manage his business in China after he can come to appropriate the Chinese relationship ‘guanxi’ and to make an inappropriate relationship with Chinese woman Xian who in turn comes to manipulate the men around her for her own purpose. With Chinglish, Hwang attempts to reveal the dynamic of translation and communication in terms of the minoritization of major language and interculturalism.
