외국인 유학생의 한국 대학생활 적응에 대한 연구

국문 초록

본 연구는 2015년 3월 2일부터 2018년 9월 28일까지 3~4차에 걸쳐 학사지도 면담과정에서 이루어진 외국인 유학생의 면담내용을 중심으로 적극적인 대학생활 적응을 나타내었던 사례들을 근거이론의 방법을 통해 개방코딩, 축코딩, 선택코딩을 도출하고, 상황모형을 전개하였다. 대학생활 적응을 잘하는 외국인 유학생에게서는 다음 세 가지 주요한 범주가 나타났다. 첫 번째 범주는 한국의 대학생활에 적응을 잘하는 집단은 대학생활에 부적응을 보이는 대다수의 외국인 유학생에게 나타나는 일반적인 현상인 언어장벽, 소통의 장벽 속에 갇히거나, 무기력의 연속 상태에 빠지지 않고 적극적으로 외로움에 대한 대응을 시도하고 있다는 점이다. 특히 중국학생에 비해 베트남 학생은 가족 및 친인척이 함께 유학을 하여 초기부터 심리적 안정을 함께 도모하며 원활한 대학생활을 유지하거나, 대학생활에서도 친구 선후배 간의 관계가 매우 잘 형성되어 있어 대학생활의 초기 적응에서 느끼는 낯섬과 외로움을 극복하는 것이 보다 용이하다는 특징을 보여주었다. 두 번째 범주는 한국의 대학생활에 적응을 잘하는 집단에서는 학비 및 생활비 등의 경제적 부담을 적게 받거나, 학교의 외국인 장학제도(TOPIK 급수와 학교 성적이 높을수록 외국인학생 등록금의 혜택이 많다)을 적극적으로 수용하여 경제적 부담을 극복하는 학생들이다. 이들 학생은 학교에서 시행하는 제반 제도를 익히고 적극적으로 참여할 뿐 아니라, 외국인 유학생에게 주어지는 다양한 장학금에 접근하려고 노력하는 특징이 있다. 세 번째 범주는 한국의 대학생활에 잘 적응하며 적극적인 활동을 하고 있는 외국인 유학생들은 자신이 원하는 목표가 분명한 특징을 지니고 있으며, 뚜렷한 목표의식을 가지고 도전하는 자세를 지니고 있다. 이들 외국인 유학생들은 부모에게서 경제적으로나 심리적으로 독립을 준비하며, 자신의 목표를 위해 자기계발을 하는 특징이 보인다.

영문 초록

In this study, we found cases that showed active adaptation to college life from interviews of international students during the academic advising interview process from March 2, 2015 to September 28, 2018. Foreign students were interviewed three or four times. Open coding, axial coding, and selective coding were derived through the method of grounding theory, and a situation model was developed. There are three main categories of foreign students who are good at adapting to college life. The first category is a group that is well suited to college life in Korea with the possible exception of the language barrier, a problem common to most foreign students. Students in this group are actively trying to respond and do not fall into a continuous state of lethargy and loneliness. In particular, compared to Chinese students, Vietnamese students studying with family members and relatives have a psychological stability from the beginning, maintaining a good college life and good relationships with friends and other college students and thus overcoming feelings of strangeness and loneliness. The second category of students well adapted to Korean college life are individuals less likely to be economically burdened with tuition and living expenses, often due to their participation in the school’s foreign scholarship system (i.e., students with higher TOPIK scores and school grades). In their quest to overcome the economic burden, these students are not only acquainted with and actively participating in the school system, but are also trying out for various scholarships open to international students. The third category of foreign students who adapt well to university life in Korea engage in activities reflecting their desired goals. Due to their clear goal consciousness they are better prepared for economic and psychological independence and goal-oriented self-development.
