국문 초록

지속 가능한 디자인과 예술에 많은 사람들이 관심을 기울이고 있는 오늘날, 업사이클링은 폐기물의 단순한 재사용 및 재활용을 넘어 새로운 가치의 창출이라는 점에서 주목 받고 있다. 쓰레기는 더 이상 폐기되고 가치가 없는 것이 아니라 용도에 따라 새롭게 혹은 그보다 더 높은 가치를 지닌 것으로 재창조될 수 있다는 것이다. 업사이클링은 폐기물을 단순히 재활용하는 차원을 넘어, 디자인과의 접목을 통한 재화로서의 가치 상승이라는 경제적 효과창출과 버려진 물건을 해체하거나 재조합을 통해 제품 또는 작품으로 창작되어 폐기물의 가치를 높인다. 본 연구는 업사이클링이 21세기에 들어 급격하게 진화중이라는 점에 주목한다. 특히 인간생활에서 안락한 삶의 필요도구인 가구에 창조적 도구로써 업사이클링 개념의 접목을 통해 환경문제 해결과 더불어 가구디자인의 새로운 창작의 가능성을 연구하고자 한다. Ⅱ장에서는 업사이클링의 일반적 정의 및 현대 업사이클링의 현황을 살펴보고, 업사이클링의 사례를 유형별로 분석한다. Ⅲ장에서는 업사이클링 가구디자인의 창출 방법에 따른 현황을 알아보고, 업사이클링이 가구디자인에서의 의미와 역할 그리고 창조의 비전을 발견하고자 한다. 이를 통해 가구디자인에서의 업사이클링 개념의 적용과 영역확장에 있어서 디자이너들이 가져야할 문제의식과 창조적 태도를 탐색하고자 한다.

영문 초록

The terminology ‘up-cycle’ and ‘up-cycling’ has been a subject of interest over the recent years. It is beyond recycling thrown away objects and materials. Up-cycle creates new values, emerging as a focal phenomenon as wastes are no longer regarded as being useless. Depending on the function, wastes can take on a new life, possessing a higher value with its newly created development separate from what it used to be in the past. This study proves the fact that up-cycling waste products is on the increase particularly entering into the 21st century. Up-cycling in furniture design is a new concept addressing environmental issues. The study focuses on the concept of up-cycling for new furniture designs. In the second chapter, the study looks at general definition of up-cycling and the current state of this phenomenon. Examples are given to prove the issues confronting this phenomenon. In the third chapter, methods of designing furniture with the concept of up-cycling is addressed. Creative vision using this process is taken into account based on the significance of designing furniture additionally as defining its role. In conclusion, the study observes the conditions confronted by the concept of up-cycling, saving resource and developing a new approach in design by taking the environment into account. The field of art and design is in reality expanding as such new approaches suggest new ways of using material and design. This is a new concept and a new way of creating.
