국문 초록

아렌트적 관점에서 ‘권위’ 는 고대 그리스와 로마에 그 근원을 두고 있다. 플라톤과 아리스토텔레스 사상으로 대표되는 그리스적 ‘권위’ 개념은 지배와 피지배를 구분하는 이분법적 사유와 전정치 영역에서 이루어졌던 폭력의 요소를 포함하고 있다. 그리고 오늘날 우리는 그리스적 개념 안에서 ‘권위’를 이해하고 있다. 아렌트는 교육 영역에서 정당화될 수 있는 ‘권위’ 란 로마에 그 근원을 두고 있음을 주장한다. 로마적 ‘권위’는 건국의 구속력을 통해 획득되는 ‘안정성’, ‘자율성’, ‘탁월성’을 기반으로 한다. 이에 근거하여 본고는 아렌트가 분석한 ‘권위’ 개념의 그리스적 한계를 제시하고, 로마적 ‘권위’의 교육학적 유의미성 안에서 교육에서의 ‘권위’가 ‘새로움의 그라비타스’, ‘시작으로 발현되는 자유’, 그리고 ‘세계를 위한 책임’과 관련이 있음을 논한다. 이를 통해 “교육의 위기”에서 아렌트가 강조한 ‘권위’ 상실의 문제와 교육적 ‘권위’가 무엇인지를 다시금 분명히 하는 계기로 삼고자 한다.

영문 초록

Hannah Arendt’s concept of ‘authority’ begins from contemplating ancient Greek-Roman thought. For Greek philosophers such as Plato and Aristotle, the concept of authority is based on the ruling and the ruled dichotomy, and therefore authority is inevitably premised on employing violence as it is easily seen in the realm of pre-politics. This idea still forms the basis of our concept of authority today. Arendt argues that authority can be useful and justifiable in education but this authority should be the Roman concept, not the Greek one. The Roman concept of authority claims its legitimacy from ‘stability’, ‘autonomy’, and ‘par excellence’ which can be brought as the result of accepting the authority. This essay will demonstrate Arendt’s criticism of the Greek concept of authority and her argument of the Roman concept’s pedagogical meaning. In so doing, this study aims to prove that Arendt championed the authority in education as a useful value to materialize ‘gravitas of the newness’ and ‘freedom as a beginning’ and ‘responsibility for a common world’. This will help us to better understand that Arendt was concerned about the crisis of education caused by the loss of authority and therefore she meant to rehabilitate the ‘pedagogical authority’ as a beneficial value for education.
