국문 초록

본고는 교육열과 학벌주의의 본질에 대한 올바른 이해를 우리 사회에서 통용되는 학력 개념을 세 층위로 분석하여 논의하고자 하였다. 본고는 이를 위해 세 가지 연구문제―첫째, 학력주의와 학벌주의는 어떻게 다르며, 학벌주의와 교육열은 어떻게 연관되어지는가?, 둘째, 교육목표로서 학력 개념은 어떤 범주적 성격을 가지고 있는가?, 그리고 셋째, 학력 관련 용어들이 실 제 사회적 담론들 속에서 어떤 의미를 가지며 통용되고 있는가?―를 논의하였다. 본고의 논의를 위해 첫째, 학벌주의 및 교육열의 역사적 배경과 학벌주의 사회의 성격에 대한 문헌분석, 둘째, 국내외의 학교교육 목표들과 정책 의제들 속에 나타난 ‘학력’ 개념의 사용현황에 대한 분석, 그리고 셋째, 학력 개념의 세 가지 이념 축 및 범주적 성격을 바탕으로 학력 관련 용어가 미디어 기사와 학술 연구들에서 사용되는 현황을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 학력(지식)은 세 가지 가치―본질적, 도구적, 그리고 상징적 가치―를 가지고 있으며, 학력이 사회 속에서 교육의 목표로서 세 가지 성격―인식론적, 규범적, 그리고 갈등론적―을 가지고 범주화되고 있었다. 본고에서 논의한 학력 개념의 세 가지 가치, 성격, 그리고 층위를 통해, 우리나라의 학벌주의와 교육 열의 본질을 올바로 이해하고, 그에 합당한 사회적 논의를 이끌어낼 수 있을 것이다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to provide and discuss the three layers of scholastic ability― psychological, educational, and sociological―, which can serve as a theoretical framework for arguing that education fever is a matter of credentialism. To fulfill this goal, this paper focuses on the following research questions: first, how is scholastic ability different from academic clique and how is the phenomenon, education fever, related to academic clique?; second, how can the notion scholastic ability as it appears in educational objectives be categorized?; and third, how are the terms regarding scholastic ability utilized in social media and academic research? To investigate these inquiries, the paper i) reviews historical backgrounds and the characteristics of academic clique and education fever in Korean society, ii) analyzes the usage of term, academic ability, in the domestic and international agenda of educational objectives, and iii) analyzes the recent usages of the term in media and academic research, respectively. The term, scholastic ability, is rooted in three different values―essential, instrumental, ad symbolic―, and, as a result, its characteristics are categorized into epistemological, normal, and conflict category. In addition, the notion can be discussed in terms of psychological, educational, and sociological layers. According to the three layers of scholastic ability, education fever is regarded a phenomenon that chases credentialism or academic clique as symbolic value, rather than genuine learning. This framework of analysis can be a significant perspective to understand the latent problems of academic clique.
