국문 초록

이 논문은 19세기 중엽에 편찬된 『東野彙輯』을 당시 사대부계층이 공유하고 있던 위기의식의 산물로 읽어내는 것을 목표로 한다. 『동야휘집』의 편찬자인 이원명은 당대 사회에서 유통되는 이야기를 수집, 기록하는 것을 넘어 적극적인 개작을 시도하였다. 서사의 내적인 논리를 변개하는 수준에 이르는 경우, 개작의 방향성은 仁義의 실현이라는 도덕적 이념을 전면화하는 전략을 취하고 있다. 그러나 보다 중요한 사실은 부의 축적을 통해 현실적 제약을 극복하는 일련의 서사들을 仁義의 실천이라는 이념으로 덧바르는 글쓰기 전략이 부의 축적과 신분 이동에 대한 욕망과 상상력을 서사적으로 차단하는 적극적 개입이라는 사실이다. 이는 조선후기 사회가 실질적으로 致富를 통해 계층의 이동 가능성이 열려있던 시대임을 감안할 때 그러한 욕망의 가능성을 차단하고자 한 이원명의 시도는 야담집을 편찬하는 작업이 단순히 ‘문학성’을 고취하는 행위가 아니었음을 짐작케 한다. 이러한 문제의식 아래서 본고는 『동야휘집』에 실린 치부담을 분석의 대상으로 삼음으로써 당시 사대부계층이 체제의 균열을 봉합하고, 정형화되지 않은 다양한 욕망들을 지배 가능한 영역으로 재편하려 했던 기획을 읽어내고자 한다. 그리고 야담집을 편찬하는 구체적인 실천들이 단지 사대부 계층의 문장 취미가 아니라 항간에 떠도는 이야기를 수집하고 정리하되 적극적으로 변개함으로써 민중들을 개도할 수 있는 담론적 지형을 마련하고자 했다는 가설적 주장을 제기한다.

영문 초록

This paper aims to read the DongyaHwijip(東野彙輯) compiled in the middle of the nineteenth century as a product of the crisis consciousness shared by the Sadaebu(士大夫) class at that time. Lee Won-Myung, a compiler of DongyaHwijip, tried to make an aggressive adaptation beyond collecting and recording the stories circulated in contemporary society. When it reaches the level of changing the inner logic of the narrative, the direction of the adaptation takes a strategy to foreground the moral idea of the realization of In-Ui(仁義). However, more importantly, it is the fact that writing strategies that adapt the stories that overcome the actual constraints by accumulating wealth as the stories that realize the moral ideology are active interventions that block the desires and imaginations of wealth accumulation and ascension. Considering that the possibility of hierarchical movement was open through the wealth of the late Choson society, Lee Won-myeong’s attempt to block the possibility of such desire was not merely an act of encouraging literature, It is an example that shows. Under this consciousness, I would like to read the story of the accumulation of riches in the whole book as an object of analysis, so that the ruling class seeks to squeeze the cracks of the system and reorganize the various amorphous desires into a dominant area. In conclusion, this essay suggests that the concrete practices of compiling narratives were not only the noble literary hobbies of the upper class, but also the political activity of making the discursive terrain that was able to open the populace.
