환경 청지기직에 대한 신학적 성찰

국문 초록

본고는 환경 청지기직 모델에 대한 비평적인 신학적 성찰을 목적으로 한다. 그리스도교 생태환경 담론에서 폭넓게 사용되는 환경 청지기직 모델의 신학적 의미가 무엇인지 그 관점이 타당한지 살펴봄으로써, 생태 위기에 응답하는 교회의 신학적 접근을 성찰하는데 본고는 주안점을 둔다. 이러한 비평적 접근은 환경 청지기직 모델 자체를 부정하는 것이라기보다는 그 문제점을 개선하고 좀 더 새로운 신학적 방향을 모색하기 위함이다. 이러한 목적을 가진 본고는 크게 두 장으로 구성되었다. 1장에서는 환경 청지기직 모델에 대한 기본적인 이해에 초점을 두며, 청지기직 개념이 어떻게 정의되는지 어떤 역사적 배경 속에서 형성되었는지 살펴보았다. 또한 청지기직에 대한 더글라스 존 홀(Douglas John Hall)의 신학적 접근을 통해 이 모델이 가진 신학적 의미에 대해서도 고찰하였다. 본고의 2장은 그리스도교 환경 청지기직 모델의 긍정적인 면과 부정적인면을 분석하는 데 주안점을 두었다. 이 과정을 통해 청지기직 모델이 창조계 속에서 인간의 위치를 겸손하게 두면서도 다른 창조물을 보호해야 할 특별한 역할을 강조한다는 장점을 확인할 수 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 환경 청지기직 모델은 인간 중심적 세계관을 벗어나지 못하고 창조 세계에 대한 위계적이고 관리적이며 이원론적 관점에 한정되는 문제가 있음을 발견할 수 있었다. 뿐만 아니라 이 모델은 일반적으로 알려진 것과는 달리 성경에 의해 희박하게 뒷받침되고, 여전히 창조계를 인간을 위한 재화로 보는 관점을 담고 있음이 드러났다. 이러한 문제점을 극복하고자 제안된 새로운 모델들을 소개하면서 본고는 교회의 생태환경적 담론이 단순히 피조물 보호의 책임을 강조하는데 그치지 않고 하느님과 인간 그리고 다른 창조물의 친밀한 관계를 증진시키는데 초점을 맞추어야 함을 주장하였다. 즉, 생태 위기에 응답하는 신학적 접근이 ‘관리(management)’와 ‘의무(duty)’의 모델을 넘어 ‘관계(relationship)’ 와 ‘돌봄(care)’에 초점을 두는 쪽으로 그 방향성을 변화시킬 필요가 있다는 것이다.

영문 초록

A primary aim of this thesis is to critically explore the model of Christian environmental stewardship which is widely referenced in various Christian communities. By examining theological implications of the Christian stewardship and by questioning whether it is an appropriate model, the study focuses on reflecting on current theological approach of the Church responding to the ecological crisis. This critical examination does not aim to deconstruct the present model itself, but to reconfigure its limitations and seek for a more developed theological approach. For this task, this thesis included two chapters. The first chapter explored how the stewardship concept is defined, and how it has been developed and used historically in Christian communities. This chapter also reviewed the stewardship theology that is presented by Douglas John Hall. Then, in the second chapter, I investigated the strengths and the weaknesses of the stewardship model. Through this analysis, the study found that the stewardship approach had strengths to limit human power over the rest of creation while highlighting the special role of humanity in the world. Despite efficacious dimensions as well as popularity, the model displayed many problematic characteristics. As this chapter has noted, Christian environmental stewardship remained profoundly anthropocentric and failed to overcome the dualistic, hierarchical, and managerial view of creation. Furthermore, this model was thinly supported by the Bible and still contained financial overtones which rendered the natural world as a resource subject to human interests. In introducing alternative approaches which overcome limitations of the stewardship model, the thesis argued that ecological discourse of the Church ought to focus on promoting the intimate relationship among God, human beings, and the rest of creation beyond emphasis on Earth-keeping responsibility. That is, today’s theological approach to the ecological crisis needs to be changed from a model simply emphasizing ‘management’ and ‘duty’ to a model deeply concerning with ‘relationship’ and ‘care.’
