영문 초록

The purpose of this paper is finding out the images of man and woman ín Korean and Kazakh myths. Korean and Kazakh people share so much common mythícal ground‘ But they have differences, too. One of them ís presented in this paper. The differences of both peoples, probably, are originated from socio-environmental differences. The charactεristic feature of Kazakh image of man and woman is complementarity of both sexes comparing to Korean’S. Kazakh man in their myths has usually a brave, strong warrior imagε， but woman has a image who has magical power and wisdom. This is not always applicable, but complεmentaríty is kept almost all thε time. For example, if man has magical power, woman is bravε and strong, appearing sometimes as warrior‘ Thε virrues, i.e., braverγlstrongness and wisdom/magical power will be more complete if a man is equipped with borh qualities. However, both qualities are dìvíded and possessεd by man and woman in Kazakh myths. Therefore, it will bε not complete unless ìt ìs not pairεd and complemented. This is characteristic image of male and female in Kaza1 myths. Comparing to Kazakh myths, complemεntary feature of man and woman is not represenred in Korean myths. 1n and which are analysε.d by this paper, the image of man is depicted very negative. 1-1an is the being who is stupid, non-moral, and lacking in hεroic quality, and who more than oftεn gives difficulties to woman. However, woman has all good things‘ She is brave, wise, and having magica! powεr， εt c. This feature of Korean man and woman must be influenced by Confucianism. It is appeared that Confucianism have transformed and distorted the myths. Comparing to Korean myths, Kazakh myths is preserving ancient images of man and woman.
