국문 초록

이 논문은 19세기 초 일본의 임진왜란 통사인 『征韓偉略』에 나타난 임진왜란 해전 이해를 정리한 것이다. 『征韓偉略』은 카와구치 조주(川口長孺)가 당시 일본에 전해진 여러 자료를 정리하여 편찬한 것으로, 당시 일본의 임진왜란 이해 방식을 잘 보여준다. 이 책에는 임진왜란의 주요 해전에 대해서도 정리하고 있는데, 일부 해전이 누락되어 있을 뿐 아니라 사실과 다소 차이를 보이는 경우가 보인다. 이는 『征韓偉略』이 당시 일본 역사학의 수준과 역사인식에 기인한 것이다. 이에 비해 조선 수군의 軍船과 무기의 수준에 대해서는 높은 평가를 내리고 있다. 『정한위략』의 임진왜란 해전 정리의 수준은 높지 않지만 이 책은 자료집의 성격을 가지고 있어 이후 한국과 일본의 임진왜란 관련 이해에 강한 영향을 주었다는 점에서 이 책에 대한 이해는 매우 중요하다.

영문 초록

This article studies the Japanese thinking in the 19th century on naval warfare, based on the description and analysis on the Imjin War(The Japanese Invasions of Joseon in 1592) in Seikaniryaku. Seikaniryaku, a Japanese military historical work on the Imjin War, was written by Kawaguchi Choju at the beginning of the 19th century, with a variety of sources available in Japan. Seikaniryaku shows the way Japan had thought about the Imjin War in the 19th century. The work deals with not only land battles but also the main sea battles. However, it is noteworthy that Kawaguchi Choju omitted certain naval battles and sometimes distorted the truth. These problems stemmed from the academic level and perception of Japanese academia at the time. Nonetheless, it seems that Kawaguchi Choju properly appraised the level of the naval force of Joseon in warships and naval weapons. Although the information and description on the naval warfare in the work is not perfect, it is still valuable as a source book on naval warfare as well as the Imjin War. Furthermore, it is very important to research into Seikaniryaku, considering that the work had highly influenced on both Japanese and Koreans for understanding the Imjin War.
