영문 초록

This is the study on the properties and the purposes of intellectuals adoration of Gen. Yi Sun-shin in 18~19c. The adoration and idolization of Gen. Yi had been carried on continually after he fell in the battle against Japanese navy invading Korean Peninsular in 1598. This study finally came to the conclusion that the worship for Gen. Yi for the period was: First, a useful strategy to control the nation. King Jeong-jo, the 22nd king of Chosun dynasty crowned from 1753, wrote the epitaph of Gen. Yi s tombstone for himself, provided financial supports to Naetango, the office managing King s private properties, and Eoyeong_chung, the administration in responsibility for defense of the capital, to publish 「Chungmygong_yisunsin_jeonsuh」, the biography of Gen. Yi, and declared that Gen. Yi s contributions were as great as the sum of two famous General and advisory in ancient Chinese countries, Lee Seong and Zhuge Liang s. Those programs empowered by King Jeong-jo were important measures to improve people s loyalty and spirit of martyrdom. Second, given by re-discovering Gen. Yi s humanities and virtues. Seong Dae-jung emphasized Gen. Yi s attitude of getting along with provincial naval men to collect the actual field informations and experiences. Jeong Yakyong reminded Gen. Yi s humanity as like being a dutiful son or a strong moderation. These were new attempt to explain Gen. Yi s leadership and win through the different views. Third, related to practical interests in the military system, coast defense policies, battleships and the Turtle ship . Hong Daeyong and Jeong Yakyong expressed their interests in the Turtle ship while Han Chiyun wrote about the Turtle ship in detail on his book, 「Haedong_Yeoksa」. Lee Yuwon also stressed the battleship development and strengthening forces. Fourth, the way to propagandize nationalism by presenting up the model of national hero. Kim Yunsik, Hwan Hyeon, Kim Taekyeong and other intellectuals praised the Gen. Yi as a national hero while they were yearning for the appearance of a great leader of the country in the historical situation that Japan and Western states rushed into the territory with violence. Yu Insuk, especially, called Gen.Yi as an alternative leader criticizing the over-evaluation of Bismarck and Napoleon at that time. He pointed that the idol to be patterned by the young intellectuals broken down under the gloomy prospect of the nation should be not the western heros but Gen. Yi. This trend of adoring Gen. Yi Sunsin was maintained through the transitional periods from the Greater Korean Empire to the Japanese colony, which was the brutal time for the Korean, by Sin Chaeho and Park Eunsik as a effort to build up the national consciousness and pride. Gen. Yi, moreover, has been being reviewed and brought up by the intellectuals whenever Korean face critical crisises over the generations. And this heritage also should be preserved for the future.
