국문 초록

이순신은 숭고한 삶의 여정을 보여준 한 사람의 完人으로 기억되고 있다. 그것은 이순신 스스로 삶을 통해 보여준 결과였다. 역사적 인간으로서의 자기구현과 민족에 대한 헌신이 그것이다. 또한 그의 안타까운 죽음은 그의 삶을 더욱 비장하고 또 진한 아쉬움 속에 음미 되도록 만들었다. 그를 영웅으로 기억하며 반추하는 태도 속에는 그에 대한 후인들의 역사 인식과 그 당대적 삶의 지평이 중첩되어 드러난다. 그러므로 기억과 표상으로 존재하는 이순신상을 살펴보는 것은 이순신에 대한 역사적 평가를 점검한다는 것 외에도 이순신을 통해 드러내고자 한 당대인의 역사인식을 살펴본다는 데 적지 않은 의미가 있다. 성호학파의 이순신에 대한 기억 역시 이러한 일반적인 관념에서 그리 멀리 벗어나 있지는 않다. 성호 이익은 이순신을 국난에서 민족을 구한 불세출의 영웅이자 지략가로 바라보았 다. 그러나 그것은 일방적으로 영웅을 찬양하는 방식이 아니라 임진왜란에 대한 반성적 검토 위에서 이순신이라는 역사적 인물을 되짚어 보는 문맥 가운데 제시되었다. 국난에 임하는 준비된 장수로서의 면모와 역사적 현실을 살아간 충직하고 유연한 인물상에 대한 것이 그것이다. 그것은 이순신을 과거의 기억될 만한 인물로서 떠올리는 것이 아니라 당대에 요청되는 인물상으로 과거로부터 선택적으로 조명된 모범적인 인물로서의 부각이었다. 다산 정약용은 이순신을 뛰어난 장수로서의 재능을 가진 인물로 기억하지만 동시에 그를 통해 확인할 수 있는 제도와 문화적 표상으로서의 이순신을 떠올렸다. 다산에게서 이순신은 문무를 겸비하고 덕행을 갖춘 이상적인 군인이었고, 그의 선박과 제도는 쉽게 평가할 수 없는 실전의 가치가 있는 것으로 발전적으로 계승해야할 유산이었다. 이순신에 대한 성호학파의 기억과 표상은 그러므로 이순신의 영웅적인 행적에 동의하면서도 그 자체에 함몰되지 않고 이순신을 통해 확보할 수 있는 武와 武人, 국방에 대한 역사 적, 제도적, 문화적 가치의 의미를 짚어주었다는 점에서 다시금 되새겨볼 충분한 이유가 있다.

영문 초록

Yi Sun-sin is remembered as a whole person who did show us a sublime journey of life. It is the result that he gained through his own life. It is the very self-actualization as a historic person and also devotion to the nation. And for his sorrowful death, we remember his life in more tragic and deeper sadness. The attitude to recall and reflect him as a hero exhibits his descendants’ historic consciousness over him overlapped by the aspects of his live in those days. Therefore, examining the figure of Yi Sun-sin existing as memory and representation is meaningful not just in that it investigates historic assessment on him but in that it also checks the people of the time’s historic consciousness that they wanted to show through him. The memory of Sungho School over Yi Sun-sin is also not very different from that general conception. Sungho Yi-ik saw him as an extraordinary hero and tactician who saved the country from a national crisis. However, it is not the way of praising him blindly as a hero but suggested in the context reexamining the historic figure of Yi Sun-sin on the reflective consideration over Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. It is about a faithful and flexible figure who exhibited aspects as a general well-prepared for national crises living in historic reality. It is not that it recalls him as a memorable figure of the past but that it highlights him as an example figure selectively noticed from the past as a figure that is requested of the time. Dasan Jung Yak-yong remembers him as a figure having prominent talent as a general but also reflects him as institutional and cultural representations. To Dasan, Yi Sun-sin was an ideal solider equipped with literary and military arts as well as virtues and also a heritage to be succeeded developmentally since his ship and system had practical value that could not easily be estimated.
